Job Summary
Security guards patrol The CORE and provide a highly visible presence to all tower and mall employees, tenants and patrons alike. Based on a thorough understanding of the site SOP, guards provide protection to the public and deal with all operational and emergency situations as they arise in a professional and courteous manner.
Site covers 3.8 million square feet including four high‑rise towers, retail, parkades, Devonian Gardens, and an indoor City of Calgary park. The venue receives over 25 million guests a year and hosts several thousand Calgarians daily.
Patrol Responsibilities- Provide a visible, professional presence throughout the property.
- Conduct morning patrols of all upper and lower areas once the mall opens; continue patrols of towers after hours.
- Ensure all stores are open for business.
- Check fire panels and confirm all systems are functional; report any trouble signals.
- Escort mall guests or property employees who are not following site rules.
- Respond promptly to all employee, tenant, or patron inquiries; direct non‑security issues to the appropriate department.
- Patrol all internal and external areas, including parking, perimeter, roof areas, and road signs.
- Inspect for spills, unsafe conditions, or hazards; barricade unsafe areas until maintenance arrives.
- Keep service areas free of garbage and debris.
- Conduct escorts for retailers and management upon request.
- Verify that only authorized individuals are in restricted areas and challenge unapproved persons.
- Assist in evacuations and provide support during crisis situations.
- Know all policies and procedures for the fire plan and the security department’s role.
- Be fully trained in the proper use of fire extinguishers, other firefighting equipment, first aid, and CPR (proof of certification required).
- Respond promptly to alarms, disturbances, and emergencies such as fires, medical incidents, or security breaches.
- Maintain a security officer notebook for day‑to‑day reporting.
- Write detailed incident reports as needed.
- Maintain accurate logs and reports of incidents, inspections, and irregularities observed during shifts.
- Complete daily activity reports and incident reports as required.
- Issue trespass notices to individuals barred from the CORE.
- Interact professionally with employees, visitors, and contractors while maintaining confidentiality and discretion.
- Aid and direct staff or guests as needed.
- Be familiar with all CW employees at the CORE, including management personnel.
- Develop and maintain excellent police relations.
- Ensure adherence to security protocols and local regulations.
- Enforce policies, rules, and regulations of the facility in a calm and respectful manner.
- Be familiar with Cushman & Wakefield Management Security Policies and procedures.
- Understand the Trespass to Property Act, the use of force, conflict de‑escalation, and arrest procedures.
- Know applicable laws, bylaws, and Canadian Criminal Code sections relevant to property protection.
- Perform other tasks as may be required.
- Strong observational and critical thinking skills.
- Ability to remain calm and composed under pressure or in emergency situations.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Basic knowledge of security systems and protocols.
- Physical fitness and ability to perform patrol duties and stand for extended periods.
- Ability to work flexible hours, including nights, weekends, and holidays.
- Sierra Guards – Highest trained officers; minimum six months onsite, complete all training, and pass Guard Training Exam.
- Tango Guards – Onsite one to six months; have not passed Guard Training Exam.
- Bravo Guards – Part‑time guards.
- Retail Guard – Focused on building relationships with retail tenants; patrol mall area, visit tenants, report concerns, maintain interaction records, respond to sightings.
- Lima Guards – Patrol assigned area under a Team Lead or Cush Wake Supervisor; observe and report loitering, sleeping, panhandling; assist higher‑tier guards with removals and inspections.
- Food Court Guard – Patrol assigned area; observe, report, and respond to loitering, sleeping, panhandling; record tenant and customer interactions.
- Trainer – Full‑time dedicated position to train guards with confidence.
- Information Desk – Provides information kiosk; informs management when tenants are not open.
- Admin Support – Supports security office and systems.
- Front Desk Control – Assists supervisors and controllers in the security control centre.
