Overview

Security professionals protect property, people and assets by controlling access, monitoring activities, patrolling assigned areas, and enforcing regulations. Roles may include airport security, armored car security, corporate security, private investigation, and retail loss prevention. Responsibilities include directing visitors, verifying identification, performing security checks, and ensuring safety and emergency procedures are followed.

• Control access to establishments and monitor activities to prevent theft, vandalism and disturbances.
• Operate security control-room equipment, patrol assigned areas, and resolve conflicts.
• Issue passes, direct visitors, check identification, and perform security checks of passengers and luggage at airports where applicable.
• Investigate unlawful acts by employees or patrons and recommend security measures such as electronic detection and access devices.
• Conduct investigations to locate missing persons and obtain information for civil or criminal matters; may conduct polygraph tests where required.
• Prevent and detect shoplifting and theft in retail environments; remove trespassers and contact authorities when necessary.
• Report to supervisors on a regular basis and document suspicious activities.
• Perform or coordinate safety and emergency procedures as needed.

• Completion of secondary school typically required; college diploma in law and security or related field may be required.
• Security training is often provided; airport security and establishment-specific training may be required.
• Licensing requirements vary by role and jurisdiction (e.g., firearms licensing for guards carrying firearms; PAL and FAC for armored car roles; permits in certain regions such as Quebec).
• Experience in security or law enforcement is advantageous.
• Basic first aid skills are beneficial; good physical fitness and attention to detail.

• Full-time, permanent position; 40 hours per week; shifts may include evenings, nights, weekends.
• Salary range: $17.46 – $27.00 per hour (varies by role and location).
