Overview
Afternoon/Weekend Shift Plumber – Facilities Management at the University of Calgary. Full‑time, four days per week Thursday to Sunday, with rotating standby or on‑call callouts.
Responsibilities- Perform installations, maintenance and repairs of all plumbing, heating, gas piping and related mechanical systems at a certified trade level.
- Ensure compliance with University specifications, standards, procedures and relevant Plumbing Codes.
- Manage own time effectively, keep supervisor informed of activities and progress of work.
- Provide customer service to internal personnel, contractors, suppliers, students and other members of the University community.
- Maintain equipment, work spaces and tools supplied by the University in safe working order.
- Participate in training and development activities in coordination with the department.
- Meet ongoing OHS initiatives, follow University OHS policies, procedures and legislation.
- Attend regularly, report to start of shift, and maintain personal hygiene, attire and grooming appropriate for the work environment.
- Provincial or interprovincial plumbing trade certification with 3–5 years of experience.
- Power Engineering certificate (5th–1st Class), gas‑fitting, steam fitting and/or cross‑connection control testing certificate preferred.
- Agree to attain minimum 4th Class Power Engineering within 12 months of employment; training provided by employer.
- Valid Class 5 Alberta driver’s licence with less than 7 demerit points; licence abstract will be requested.
- Good knowledge of the Canadian Plumbing Code.
- Physical strength and stamina to lift heavy loads, work on feet for long periods and in cramped positions.
- Mechanical ability, hand and power tool use, ladder work at various heights and safety‑conscious attitude.
- Ability to work in a variety of environments including office settings, classrooms, research laboratories and service tunnels.
- Logical and reasoning ability to identify strengths and weaknesses of alternative solutions, conclusions or approaches to problems.
- Team‑work ability, mentoring and sharing knowledge with apprentices and co‑workers.
- Independent, minimal supervision and timely completion of tasks.
- Record of upgrading and updating trade skills, staying current with industry trends.
- Record of superior customer service, meeting quality standards and evaluating customer satisfaction.
- Strong communication skills, active listening and effective information sharing.
- Effective time management skills.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office suite, e‑mail and mobile communication devices.
