Job Description & How to Apply Below

We are seeking a Geomechanics Engineer to join our team developing advanced reservoir simulation software and handle relevant scientific computations. The successful candidate will contribute to the design and implementation of high-performance, geomechanics based simulation solutions that accelerate large-scale numerical simulations used in subsurface modeling.

The candidate is expected to have a strong foundation in geomechanics, particularly focusing on hydraulic fracturing modeling, completion design, and hydraulic fracturing job optimization

The candidate will collaborate with engineers to enhance the performance and scalability of complex simulation systems, improve parallel processing capabilities, and support modern high-performance computing environments. This role is ideal for someone with strong expertise in C++ programming, parallel computing, and scientific software development.

What You'll DoModel & Simulator Development:

Develop and enhance hydraulic fracturing and reservoir geomechanics simulation capabilities (including CMG's GEOMECH simulator), covering injection, depletion, compaction, subsidence, deformation, fault reactivation, induced seismicity, and caprock integrity. Contribute new physical models, numerical algorithms, and fracture-physics workflows, calibrated against laboratory and field data.

Software Engineering & Performance:

Design, build, and optimize high-performance simulation software in modern C++. Familiarity with parallelization techniques (e.g., OpenMP, MPI) to speed up large-scale simulations. Use profiling tools (e.g., Intel VTune) to find and eliminate bottlenecks in performance-critical C++ code.

Legacy Code Maintenance:

Debug, refactor, and modernize existing scientific codebases, maintaining quality through code reviews, testing, and documentation.

Verification & Validation:

Test and benchmark models for numerical accuracy, physical consistency, and production-readiness across simulation applications.

Documentation & Communication:

Produce technical reports, publications, and presentations for internal teams and clients, covering methodology, results, and software improvements.

Cross-Functional Collaboration:

Partner with software developers, geoscientists, reservoir engineers, and product teams to integrate geomechanical capabilities into CMG's simulation platform.

Research:

Track advances in geomechanics, numerical methods, and HPC, and bring forward innovative approaches for next-generation simulation technology.

Required

Skills & Qualifications
  • 3–5 years of combined professional experience across geomechanics, numerical modeling, reservoir engineering, or hydraulic fracturing applications.
  • Strong understanding of geomechanics principles, including rock and fracture mechanics, in-situ stress analysis, poroelasticity, induced seismicity, and hydraulic fracturing mechanics.
  • Experience with numerical methods for geomechanics and reservoir simulation, including the Boundary Element Method (BEM), Finite Element Method (FEM), Finite Volume Method (FVM), Finite Difference Method (FDM), or other computational mechanics approaches.
  • Strong proficiency in modern C++ (C++14 or later), able to read, modify, and extend complex scientific codebases.
  • Solid grounding in scientific computing: numerical algorithms, data structures, and performance optimization.
  • Hands-on experience with Git, Linux development environments, and command-line tooling.
  • Experience with, or demonstrated ability to quickly pick up, parallel computing techniques (OpenMP/MPI) for large-scale simulations.
  • Strong problem-solving and communication skills, with the ability to work effectively across multidisciplinary teams.

Note:

This description reflects the general nature of the role. It’s not a complete list of responsibilities—we believe in flexibility, initiative, and growing together.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience working with numerical or scientific computations and MPI/HPC.
  • Experience with containerized development environments (e.g., Docker).
  • Exposure to AWS or Azure cloud-based software development and familiarity with CI/CD practices and tools.
Education

A PhD or master’s in petroleum, civil, mechanical, or Geology/Geological engineering. Relevant experience can substitute for a formal degree.
