About the Role

Reporting to the Aquatic Centre Supervisor and Coordinator, the lifeguard is responsible for the safeguarding of guests and staff in the aquatic facility by providing exceptional safety supervision, preventing incidents, and responding to emergencies. Lifeguards have strong interpersonal and communication skills and provide excellent customer service while maintaining a clean and safe facility.

Responsibilities
1. Aquatic Centre Safety and Supervision (50%)

Supervise all aquatic areas through continuous, effective scanning and patrolling to prevent incidents and ensure a safe swimming environment.

Prevent incidents:
Identify and correct unsafe behaviours before accidents occur. Enforce facility rules consistently and respectfully.

Respond rapidly to aquatic emergencies including water rescues and administering first aid or CPR as required.

2. Facility Operations and Maintenance (25%)

Perform daily operational tasks such as water tests, head counts, mechanical checks, safety checks, and daily maintenance tasks. Document these tasks accurately and promptly.

Support opening and closing procedures.

Complete first aid reports and pool contamination reports as needed.

Report facility hazards or deficiencies to Head Guard (Lifeguard II) or supervisory staff.

3. Customer Service and Public Relations (10%)

Provide exceptional customer service by greeting patrons, answering questions, and promoting a positive, inclusive atmosphere. Handle customer concerns calmly and effectively, referring issues to a supervisor when necessary.

Educate the public about aquatic safety, facility policies, and proper use of equipment.

Promote recreation programs and water safety awareness.

4. Professional Development and Teamwork (10%)

Demonstrate teamwork, reliability, and professionalism by supporting colleagues and promoting a positive workplace culture. Willing and able to share ideas and take constructive criticism.

Participate actively in all in-service training.

Maintain all required certifications.

Model appropriate conduct on and off the deck.

5. Additional Duties as Assigned (5%)

Assist with special events or tasks as needed.

Qualifications
  • Must hold current National Lifeguard and First Aid Certification.
  • Strong knowledge of aquatic safety practices, surveillance techniques, and emergency response procedures.
  • Ability to recognize hazards, prevent incidents, and enforce facility rules in a professional and respectful manner.
  • Demonstrated ability to respond effectively to emergencies, including performing water rescues and administering First Aid/CPR.
  • Strong customer service and communication skills with the ability to interact positively with patrons of all ages and backgrounds.

Salary: $15.00 - $18.87 per hour
