Reporting to the Manager Rail Scheduling, the Rail Scheduler position is responsible for coordinating the rail shipment of product to Superior Gas Liquids’ (SGL) customer base via the timeliest and cost‑effective routes available. This role considers fleet and product availability as well as cost of product and transportation across various supply and shipping locations, then coordinates and tracks shipments of product to fulfill customer needs accordingly.
Whatyou’ll do
- Coordinate and schedule rail shipments to ensure contracted volumes are delivered on time and in alignment with customer and marketing requirements.
- Liaise closely with terminals, refineries, plants, railways, SGL marketing, and customer logistics teams to ensure correct product placement and timely delivery.
- Work with the truck scheduling team to maintain rail supply into terminals and support an efficient, continuous supply chain.
- Manage and maintain the loaded and empty railcar pipeline, ensuring optimal fleet utilization.
- Track rail fleet performance and budget, monitoring tank car usage, revenue, expenses, and shipment volumes.
- Identify cost‑saving opportunities, potential arbitrage, and value‑adding rail strategies; proactively communicate rail position to marketers.
- Approve and reconcile rail‑related invoices, disputing discrepancies with vendors when required.
- Build and maintain strong relationships with suppliers, customers, and industry partners through consistent communication and networking.
- Stay current on regulatory, customs, and rail‑related compliance requirements and ensure shipments adhere to all obligations.
- Perform additional logistics support duties as needed, including acting as backup for other scheduling roles.
- 3–5 years of experience in rail transportation, preferably within the energy or commodity sector.
- Post‑secondary education in Logistics or Supply Chain Management preferred; SMCP designation considered an asset.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office and Geometrix, with strong overall computer skills.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to build strong internal and external relationships.
- Strong planning, organizational, and multitasking abilities, with high attention to detail and accuracy.
- Solid analytical skills and the ability to work effectively under pressure.
$82,300-$102,800 annually (based on skills, experience, qualifications, and geography).
