Forklift Operator – LTL Cross Dock (Afternoon Shift)

Job Description

This role focuses on safely and efficiently operating a sit‑down counterbalance forklift in a high‑volume LTL freight cross‑dock environment. You will load and unload trailers, move pallets, handle freight documentation, and support general dock operations, including manual material handling and housekeeping, as part of a team‑oriented warehouse team.

Responsibilities
  • Operate a sit‑down counterbalance forklift to load and unload LTL freight from trailers, accounting for approximately 60% of the shift.
  • Move pallets and freight throughout the cross dock, ensuring accurate placement and safe handling at all times.
  • Manually handle freight (hand bombing) up to 50 lbs, which can range from a few to multiple repetitions per day depending on shipment volume.
  • Load and unload trailers using the forklift, ensuring freight is secure, organized, and handled according to safety procedures.
  • Assist with moving any pallets that need to be repositioned or reworked to support efficient dock operations.
  • Handle bills of lading and other shipping documentation accurately throughout the shift.
  • Support team members with unloading paperwork and ensure all required documentation is completed and organized.
  • Help maintain a clean, safe, and organized dock and yard area, including regular sweeping and debris removal each shift.
  • Perform general dock duties such as swamping, assisting with shipping and receiving tasks, and supporting cross‑dock activities as needed.
  • Adapt quickly to changing priorities in a fast‑paced workplace and switch between forklift operation, paperwork, and manual tasks as required.
  • Follow all safety policies and procedures to ensure a safe working environment for yourself and the team.
Essential Skills
  • Minimum 1 year of experience operating a sit‑down counterbalance forklift.
  • Minimum 1 year of experience loading and unloading trailers using a forklift.
  • Experience working in transportation, warehouse, distribution, 3PL, or LTL freight environments.
  • Valid forklift ticket (in‑house or private; if expired or missing, must be able to obtain or renew prior to starting).
  • Ability to lift up to 50 lbs repeatedly throughout the shift.
  • Ability to work effectively in a fast‑paced cross‑dock setting and switch tasks with ease.
  • Strong attention to safety when operating forklifts and handling freight.
  • Basic ability to handle shipping paperwork such as bills of lading and related documentation.
  • Reliable teamwork skills and willingness to assist others across various dock tasks.

Skills & Qualifications
  • Safety vest available for use on shift (strongly recommended to bring your own).
  • Previous leadership experience in a warehouse, cross‑dock, or freight environment.
  • Experience using RF scanners for shipping, receiving, or inventory tasks.
  • Hands‑on experience with waybills and bills of lading.
  • Background in LTL, shipping and receiving, cross dock, docking, 3PL, or freight operations.

Work Environment

This position is based in a very fast‑paced LTL freight cross‑dock facility handling courier and retail shipments from distributors. Trailers arrive with pallets of freight that are quickly unloaded, sorted, and repacked for retail destinations in a relatively small dock space with significant movement in and out of the bay doors. The operation includes approximately 50,000 square feet of space, 68 bay doors, and 16 forklifts in use, with a team of about 20–25 dockworkers and forklift operators on the floor across shifts.
