Position

Purpose:

The Substitute Teacher is responsible for substitute teaching upon the long- or short-term absence of an incumbent teacher.

Specific Expectations for P-8 Employees: In addition to regular teaching responsibilities (including but not limited to preparing curriculum and grade reporting, class prep, student reporting – report card narratives, parent-teacher conferences, supervision duties, classroom substitution, advisory, elective teaching, office hours, outdoor education/field trips, etc.), the following duties and responsibilities are required as part of the P-8 faculty/staff workload:

Responsibilities beyond the boundaries of teaching assignments that foster a growth mindset in order to continually improve our P-8 program such as professional development and trainings, attendance of or participation in, mandatory meetings and/or events (Director’s Days, Open Houses, accreditation meetings, etc.) are required as directed by your supervisor. All employees will be paid appropriately and according to current law. If staff are required to work outside of regular work schedule;

non-exempt employees will receive overtime pay, as eligible.

• Making every effort to be available for work when called.
• Carrying out the responsibilities, as appropriate, as a substitute for the incumbent teacher.
• Following the plan for the day's work as outlined by the teacher.
• Supervising students at play indoors and outdoors.
• Reporting all accidents or injuries to the office.
• Accurately tracking time worked in the timekeeping system; the typical school day is 7:30 a.m. 4:00 p.m.
• Uses effective class management techniques to insure effective learning.
• Other duties as assigned.

• A minimum of a BA degree in a related field. MA degree strongly preferred. For substituting in the Preschool, a minimum of twelve (12) Early Childhood Education (ECE) units are required.
• Experience teaching P-8 students, or student teaching experience is acceptable.
• A clear commitment to the educational philosophy of the school as articulated in the Goals and Criteria of Sacred Heart Schools.
• Ability to assume duties with short notice.
• Fluency in reading, writing and speaking in English. Additional skills in Spanish are highly preferred.
• Excellent verbal and written skills, as well as outstanding interpersonal skills.
• Ability to work well with students and colleagues; willingness to be an active, enthusiastic member of the SHS community.

• Strong teaching ability; enjoy working with children and adolescents.
• Excellent attendance and punctuality.

• Works in a highly stressful environment dealing with a wide variety of challenges, deadlines and a varied and diverse array of contacts.
• May work at a desk and computer for extended periods of time.
• Ability to travel safely and comfortably across a 64 acre campus.
