Airframe & Powerplant (A&P) Mechanic 2 & 3 with Security Clearance

Scaled Composites, LLC is seeking an Airframe and Power Plant (A&P) Mechanic 2 & 3 to join our team of qualified, diverse individuals. This position involves conducting rigorous inspections, adhering to strict regulatory standards, and collaborating closely across teams to ensure the airworthiness and safety of our aerospace projects.

Key Responsibilities
  • Execute scheduled and unscheduled maintenance operations on aircraft, including inspections, repairs, and troubleshooting.
  • Conduct thorough inspections of aircraft systems, components, and structures to identify potential issues.
  • Diagnose and repair electrical, mechanical, and hydraulic systems.
  • Ensure proper working condition of mechanical systems before flight.
  • Maintain meticulous records of maintenance, repairs, inspections, and related reports.
  • Perform detailed inspections on engines, wings, propellers, tails, and other aircraft parts to detect cracks, corrosion, or defects.
  • Consult maintenance manuals, specifications, and technical manuals to determine correct operations.
  • Ensure proper function of engines and operating systems via tests and tools.
  • Identify and resolve mechanical problems based on visual inspections or pilot reports.
  • Fabricate, assemble, install, and test aircraft systems parts, sub‑assemblies, and assemblies (e.g., hydraulic, pneumatic, oxygen, fuel, aircraft tube, flight control, landing gear).
  • Operate ground testing and support equipment with precision, adhering to AC 43‑13, technical manuals, blueprints, or sketches.

Skills and Qualifications
  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Two or more years of aircraft mechanical maintenance experience.
  • Valid A&P license.
  • Valid driver’s license.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of FAA paperwork (FARs, FAA Orders, Advisory Circulars, Form 337, Form 8130‑3, Form 8110, STCs).
  • Expertise in interpreting technical manuals, blueprints, and schematics.
  • Ability to work autonomously and collaboratively in a fast‑paced environment.
  • Proficiency with measuring tools (scales, calipers, micrometers).
  • Experience using fabrication equipment (grinders, jig saws, skill saws, drills, band saws, disc grinders, table saws, drill presses, planers, tube benders, cable swaggers).
  • Adaptability to configuration changes in R&D environments.
  • Experience with reciprocating and turbine aircraft.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a DoD Secret security clearance; must submit SF‑86 within first 90 days.
  • Work additional hours as required by program.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience on experimental or home‑built aircraft.
  • Flight line or flight test experience.
  • Machine shop experience.
  • Previous or current DoD security clearance.
  • Inspection Authorization (IA).
Essential Functions
  • Occasional lifting of 50+ lbs. and heavy tools/tables (75–100+ lbs.) with assistance.
  • Work in cramped, uncomfortable positions; bend, stoop, squat, kneel.
  • Operate overhead for prolonged periods, lifting up to 10–15 lbs.
  • Stand 95% of the day, occasionally 8.5–12 hours per day.
  • Wear appropriate personal protective equipment.
  • Work with composite materials (epoxy resin systems, fiberglass, carbon fiber, foam/core) and chemicals (acetone, alcohol).
  • Possibly exposed to dirt, oil, fuel, grease, hydraulic fluids.
  • Adaptable to altered schedules.
  • Perform repetitive hand and arm motions (trimming, sanding, grinding).
  • Occasional computer work.
  • Vision at close distances; adjust focus.
  • Operate forklift or heavy machinery; occasional driving of company vehicles.
  • Maintain "pass" status on OSHA‑approved Pulmonary Fitness Test.
  • Read and understand SDS.
  • Work inside or outside of buildings; exposure to weather changes.
  • Work on varied surfaces/environments (shop, cold room, aircraft structures, platforms, ladders, scaffolding, stairs).
