Are you interested in an exciting opportunity in Radiation Protection looking for a varied and interesting role in Hinkley’s HAWops team.
Hinkley Point A site is a first-generation Magnox nuclear power station. You will be part of an established team supporting the Operation of several key retrieval and processing plants at Hinkley.
Hinkley High Activity Waste Operations is at a critical point with several new facilities coming on line to process and treat the ILW waste held are currently using a Polymer Encapsulation process to treat some of our Ion Exchange Resin waste, the facility is currently undergoing active commissioning. Our Modular ILW Encapsulation Plant is about to start active commissioning and this plant will cement grout a range of waste including Fuel Element Debris and our Polymer Encapsulated waste.
In the new fiscal year our Concrete Box loading facility will also become one of our live plants. The role will include participation in design reviews for future plants, oversight of a range of HAW Operational areas on a daily basis, production and review of our supporting documentation to Operate our plant. Hinkley has a significant and interesting ILW waste portfolio and our Operational pants are scheduled to Operate over the next ten years, so it’s an exciting time to join the team and the future should offer some challenging but rewarding opportunities.
Duties/Responsibilities/Accountabilities
- Provide detailed technical radiological advice to support site, projects and programmes work. The advice to include the production of written documentation including departmental documents, technical reports, radiological risk assessments, health physics certificates, designated work documentation, dose estimates and ALARP reports. These documents to be approved in accordance with site procedures if outside of the authorisation of the individual.
- Provide advice to Senior Authorised Persons () on radiological protection requirements as appropriate.
- Reviewing and approve written work instructions for all work carried out within the controlled area boundary and other areas of the site if appropriate. The review and approval of work order cards or similar work control documents produced by the site’s planning system.
- Undertake radiological inspections and audits to ensure the effective implementation of the site radiological protection programme, including at points of work.
- Review the results of routine and non routine radiological surveys and other radiological protection programme assessments, and carry out any actions required to rectify anomalies/non-conformities.
- Support as appropriate Best Practical Means (BPM)/BAT, Best Practical Environmental Options (BPEO), ALARP assessments and other optioning processes for all work.
- Ensure that adequate records are maintained to meet statutory and Company requirements, advising on the retention of records if required.
- Ensure all areas have the correct Controlled Area designation, as appropriate. Monitor performance and take action or provide advice as necessary to maintain radiological standards and improve performance.
- Identify good practice in performance at sites and externally, and promote and deploy across the Functions/Sites.
- Comply with the Health, Safety, Environmental and Quality policies, procedures, work instructions and risk assessments. Support the continuous improvement of Health, Safety Environment and Quality on Site.
- As a customer-focused individual, the post holder will be expected to support delivery within his or her range of skills, knowledge, experience and competence.
Educated to NQF level 4 / NVQ Level 4 – Essential
NVQ 3 in Health Physics – Essential
Relevant experience in specialism related roles – Essential
Experience at a nuclear site in own specialism – Desirable
Detailed Knowledge of IRR and RSA compliance - Desirable
The role will initially be for a Radiological Protection Assistant however the successful candidate would be expected to progress to Radiological Protection Engineer B with experience and relevant training.
