Job Description OverviewPower Generation operates and maintains hydroelectric, fossil, solar, and battery storage facilities, providing approximately 5,300 megawatts of generating capacity to California. The team is dedicated to delivering safe, reliable, and cost‑effective generation in an environmentally responsible manner.
Position SummaryThis associate‑level Electrical Project Engineer is the first step in a progression series. The role provides engineering, project management, and technical support to O&M staff for small to medium capital and expense improvements to power generation and infrastructure facilities. Projects are typically discipline‑specific, limited to moderate complexity, and include upgrades or replacements of turbine/generator, boiler, auxiliary equipment, or minor civil water conveyance improvements.
Job duties vary by assignment and may include privileged and confidential work.
Minimum: $95,172 – Maximum: $142,956
Job Responsibilities- Fully understand Power Generation safety program and requirements; look for and resolve unsafe situations, model safe behavior, and contribute to safety programs.
- Actively participate on a small number of Power Gen project teams as discipline engineer or project manager, coordinating activities with other disciplines.
- Provide design criteria and calculations; ensure proper checking, design reviews, approvals, and documentation.
- Investigate resources required to complete engineering and project tasks.
- Prepare project forecast, track progress, update as needed, and provide periodic updates.
- Under direction, review and approve project material procurement lists, vendor drawings, equipment specification updates, and engineering material requests.
- Provide construction support, evaluate and recommend field construction problem resolution, support start‑up tests, and conduct field inspections as assigned.
- Procure long‑lead time material for assigned projects, working with more experienced engineers and project managers.
- Ensure all drawings are updated to reflect as‑built conditions and manage field design changes.
- Provide technical direction and oversight to consultants and contractors, ensuring quality checking of all work.
- Provide technical assessments and/or project management services for operating and maintenance problems.
- Respond promptly to facility failures to support assessment and corrective actions.
- Serve as the “on‑call supervisor” on a periodic basis to support O&M.
- Support more experienced engineers and project managers with traditional project management services for small to medium projects, including developing scope, establishing and leading teams, obtaining stakeholder concurrence, maintaining documentation, negotiating contracts, communicating status, and ensuring quality standards.
- Other duties as assigned related to engineering and project management.
Minimum Qualifications
- 4‑year BS degree in Electrical Engineering from an accredited U.S. institution (or equivalent from outside the U.S.).
- Successful completion of the NCES FE Exam and submission of documentation for the California E.I.T. examination within 150 days of hiring.
- At least 18 months of engineering and/or project management experience with demonstrated performance in a related industry, or demonstrated skill development and performance in Power Gen’s EIT program, or completion of PG&E’s college new‑hire program.
Desired Qualifications
- BS in Electrical Engineering preferred.
- Current and active California PE license desired.
- Ability to apply basic engineering and/or project management principles and theory.
- Demonstrated ability to identify information needed to solve a problem, gather and organize information systematically, develop simple analysis, and produce basic reports.
- Basic understanding of the utility industry, design requirements, and industry standards; proven ability to develop simple designs and specifications.
