Location: Edwards Air Force Base

We are seeking a highly qualified and experienced Astronautical Sciences Instructor to support the U.S. Air Force Test Pilot School (USAF TPS) at Edwards AFB, CA. This role is crucial for the development and delivery of the Test and Evaluation training curriculum specifically designed for US Space Force personnel, including operators and engineers. This in‑residence, year‑long course is offered twice annually, utilizing dedicated facilities on base.

The successful candidate will possess in-depth knowledge of Astronautics and space operations. This role involves working on‑site at Edwards AFB, directly supporting the Astronautical Sciences Technical Expert. Key responsibilities include coordinating with other USAF TPS divisions, developing, and delivering engaging classroom instruction and practical exercises to meet course learning objectives for future space test professionals.

Roles & Responsibilities
  • Instructional Delivery:
    Provide subject matter expertise and analysis to develop and deliver comprehensive classroom instruction and guide practical exercises in support of the Space Test curriculum, focusing on Astronautical Sciences and space operations.
  • Curriculum Guidance:
    Provide expert advice and support to the Astronautical Sciences Technical Expert to guide curriculum development, establish course policies, and assist in establishing new capabilities related to space test training.
  • Logistical Coordination:
    Coordinate with other USAF Test Pilot School divisions to ensure course logistical and administrative support requirements are meticulously planned and successfully executed for each class iteration.
  • On‑Site Support:
    Work full‑time, on‑site at Edwards Air Force Base, directly supporting the Astronautical Sciences division.
  • Space Systems Instruction:
    Provide instruction on the principles, operation, and test and evaluation of various space system types, including satellites (LEO, MEO, GEO), ground command and control systems, launch operations, SDA/SSA systems, SATCOM, and PNT systems.
  • Space Environment Instruction:
    Incorporate instruction on the space environment and its effects on space system performance and operations.
  • Orbital Mechanics Instruction:
    Deliver comprehensive instruction on orbital mechanics, astrodynamics, trajectory analysis, and space maneuvers relevant to space test and operations.
  • Space Test Methodologies Instruction:
    Teach specific methodologies for planning, executing, and analyzing data from space system tests, including ground verification, on‑orbit testing, and simulation‑based testing.
  • Space System Anomaly Instruction:
    Provide instruction on identifying, analyzing, and troubleshooting anomalies and performance issues in space systems.
  • Relevant Software Tools Instruction:
    Incorporate training on the use of relevant software tools for space mission planning, simulation, and analysis, such as STK, MATLAB/Simulink, or other applicable tools.
  • Additional Duties:
    Perform other duties as assigned to support the overall educational mission of the USAF Test Pilot School and the Space Test training program.
Experience
  • Minimum of 8 years of experience with any combination of space operations, space acquisition, test and evaluation, and/or systems testing.
  • At least 3 years of the required experience must be directly related to space operations.
  • Demonstrated experience in the operation or acquisition of space systems.
  • Thorough knowledge of Test and Evaluation procedures on a major acquisition program.
  • Experience delivering instruction to adult learners in an academic environment is desired.
  • Test Pilot School graduate (USAF, USN, Empire, or EPNER) is highly desired.
  • Experience with software tools such as MATLAB/Simulink or Systems Tool Kit (STK) is desired.
Education
  • Master’s degree in an engineering or related technical field with a focus on astronautical or aerospace disciplines is required.
Clearance
  • Secret clearance with the ability to obtain Special Access Program (SAP) access is required.
Work Schedule
  • Full Time, Exempt. Must be willing to work full time, on site at Edwards Air Force Base.
Travel
  • Occasional travel may be required to support course objectives or related activities.
