POSITION SUMMARY
The Restoration Geologist II position is under the general supervision of the Emergency Services and Technical Operations Branch Manager and may also report to the Senior Civil Engineer or other related positions on a project-dependent basis. This position will perform the collection and interpretation of geotechnical information and data; produce maps, figures, field notes/observations, and produce internal and external reports of a geologic nature.
Work will be conducted in both the office and the field, and relative amounts of field versus office work will be dependent on project needs and proximity to field sites.
DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
1. Conducts geological investigations that employ field observations, soil samples, test pits, well installations, aquifer testing, bore hole and surface geophysical surveys.
2. Examines and describes soil, rock, and water samples in order to interpret geologic and hydrogeologic conditions. Interprets and records sample data, conducts analyses, and compares findings to relevant studies and local, state, and federal regulations.
3. Produces high-quality maps, drawings, geospatial databases, and technical reports to support environmental restoration and emergency management projects.
4. Develops standards and workflows for the routine collection of field data by junior-level staff including water, soils, rock, and materials testing and sampling.
5. Works within an interdisciplinary team including engineers, biologists, and ecologists in the development and production of technical designs, reports, and model outputs.
6. Assists project managers with budget and scope preparation, development of work plans and project specifications, procurement and oversight of subcontractors, and general coordination of a variety of project management tasks.
7. Assists in developing environmental permit requirements, including NEPA/CEQA compliance, Storm Water Pollution Prevention Plans (SWPPP's), and realty actions.
8. Other duties as deemed necessary in order to meet the objectives of the Design and Technical Services program as determined by the Senior Civil Engineer.
9. Performs other related duties as assigned.
EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE/MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE:
1. G11:
Bachelor's degree in related field with two years job specified experience.
2. G12:
Masters with 3 years' experience or Bachelor's with 5 years' experience or other specified experience as outlined in job description.
3. Employee must be willing to acquire any special certifications or attend any training that is determined to be relevant or becomes required of the position in the future.
4. Candidates with equivalent combinations of education, training and experience will be considered.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
1. Possess a Bachelor of Science Degree in Geology, Geomorphology, or Physical Sciences field including experience in geological investigations, associated sampling, data analysis, and report production.
2. Must have 3-4 years of experience in applied geology sciences related position or associated sciences of restoration, geospatial, fisheries, natural resources, design, and engineering.
3. Demonstrated (through prior work or experience) knowledge of the regional geological setting, its hydrologic systems, and pertinent anthropogenic impacts and concerns.
4. Demonstrated experience applying geological methods to collect, analyze, and report geotechnical information, preferably in an environmental restoration project context.
5. Advanced skills and ability with ArcGIS, including the ability to create, edit, export, and manage GIS files from multiple sources.
6. Ability to configure mobile mapping applications such as Avenza PDF maps and ESRI Field Maps to set up geospatial products, databases, and workflows for field staff use.
7. Ability to produce geologic maps, cross-sections, reports, and publications.
