(To be invited to our next testing date you must submit your application no later than Sunday, August 10th.)
Under supervision and for a limited duration, to serve in a civilian position, assigned to attend an approved P.O.S.T. certified police academy; to do other related work as required. This classification has been created to offer potential employment opportunities to individuals interested in pursuing a career as a Deputy Sheriff with the Calaveras County Sheriff's Office.
DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS:
This is a civilian extra-hire (temporary) position. Incumbents are expected to be in a training capacity during the academy. Retention as a Sheriff's Recruit depends on acceptance and successful participation in the training program/police academy. Successful completion may lead to appointment as Deputy Sheriff I.
- In a trainee capacity, learns law enforcement duties under academy supervision, including patrol, responding to calls, investigations, arrests, traffic control, serving warrants, booking prisoners, and jailer duties.
Ability to:
- Observe accurately and remember details; demonstrate aptitude for law enforcement; learn laws and regulations; understand police radio procedures; make independent decisions; write clear reports; understand and follow directions; establish cooperative relationships. Membership in the Calaveras County Sheriff's Department Explorer Post is highly desirable.
Education, Training, and Experience:
High school diploma or equivalent.
AGILITY TEST
Requires good physical condition. The test includes:
- Dragging a 165 lb. dummy 30 feet in 15 seconds
- Scaling a 6-foot wall in 12 seconds
- Running 500 yards in 1 minute, 45 seconds
WRITTEN EXAMINATION
Pass a 2-hour multiple-choice exam and obtain a passing T-Score. Valid T-Scores from other P.O.S.T. agencies within 12 months are accepted.
ORAL INTERVIEW
Applicants who pass the agility test will be scheduled for an interview to evaluate motivation, interpersonal skills, problem-solving, judgment, and communication. The interview is typically scheduled within 2-3 weeks of the written and agility tests.
BACKGROUND REQUIREMENTS
- Polygraph and background investigation; psychological and medical exams as per California POST standards.
