Overview

The Superior Court of California, County of Glenn is now accepting applications for:
Interpreter Pro Tempore (Spanish). This recruitment is open continuously, but may close at any time without notice. Applications will be reviewed and interviews may be scheduled on a rolling basis.

Position

Under general supervision, interpreters perform a wide variety of language interpretation activities on an as needed basis for individuals in the court environment, including witnesses, litigants, attorneys, other court personnel, and the public. Language interpretation activities include, but are not limited to sight translation (reading written text and providing an oral translation) and consecutive and simultaneous interpretation of court proceedings and other court services.

Characteristics

This is a non-exempt position in which individuals are scheduled to work part-time on an intermittent basis. Individuals hired in this classification must be certified or registered as a court interpreter in the State of California. Interpreters are employed by the court in accordance with the Trial Court Interpreter Employment and Labor Relations Act (SB 371).

  • Interprets from and into English and the applicable non-English language using simultaneous and consecutive modes at court proceedings and for other court-related departments at the direction of the court.
  • Makes sight translations of documents for the benefit of the court including, but not limited to, court petitions, reports, waivers, felony disposition statement forms, and other documents.
  • Interprets for judges, attorneys, court staff, and other court-related departments at the direction of the court.
  • Notifies the court of any issues or situations that may impede the interpreters' performance.
  • Researches and understands terminology used in court and functions of the court which may include but not be limited to legal, technological, scientific, and/or medical terminology.
  • Reviews the daily docket and receives daily calendar assignments from the Trial Court Interpreter Coordinator or other court staff and accurately completes daily activity logs and any other documentation as required.
  • Performs other language interpretation duties as assigned, such as providing general court information at an information counter to the non-English speaking public and processing documents related to interpretation.
Employment Standards

Knowledge of:

  • Correct use of the English and non-English language specified including spelling, punctuation, and grammar
  • Familiarity of the general range of regional and cultural variations in the specified language
  • California court system and criminal justice system
  • California statutes, Rules of Court, and applicable personnel rules concerning court interpretation
  • Legal concepts and forensic terminology in both English and non-English language specified
  • Court policies and procedures

Ability to:

  • Interpret accurately and remain impartial, including in adversarial and emotionally charged situations
  • Adjust to speakers with differing voices and accents at varying rates of speed
  • Adhere to interpreter ethics and standards as stipulated in California Rules of Court, rule 2.890
  • Understand and follow written and oral instructions
  • Maintain the confidentiality of court-related records and proceedings
  • Accurately perform duties with attention to detail
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships
  • Utilize word processing, electronic communication, and calendar software
  • Communicate effectively
  • Read and understand state statutes, local ordinances, local court rules, court documents, and procedures pertaining to legal filings and processes
  • Prioritize, coordinate, and complete assigned tasks and a heavy workload
  • Interact with legal professionals, paraprofessionals, and the public in a respectful manner
  • Write neatly and legibly
  • Remain focused during long proceedings, sometimes with interruptions
  • Work as part of a team and independently
  • Flexibly meet multiple demands
Employment Qualifications

Incumbents must possess a valid Certificate as a "Certified Court Interpreter" issued by the Judicial Council of California on behalf of the State of California for languages in which certification is available, or be registered as a Court Interpreter by the Judicial Council of California on behalf of the State of California. Criminal History Requirement: Candidates are required to pass a criminal history background check.
