$4,883.00 - $6,127.00 per Month. New to State candidates will be hired into the minimum salary of the classification or minimum of alternate range when applicable.

Job Description and Duties

Working under the supervision of a Caltrans Maintenance Supervisor, the incumbent operates Category 1 and Category 2 equipment used by the assigned unit, and works individually or with a crew performing tasks related to highway maintenance work. May work with other crews. The incumbent may be required to work overtime due to storms, emergencies, or special work projects, as determined by the Supervisor or Department.

Must possess a valid Class A driver’s license with Tank endorsement. This position is represented under collective bargaining. An official State Application signed and dated is required and subject to screening. Applicant must have passed the exam and be on the current eligibility list for this classification. Operates Category 1 and Category 2 equipment used by the assigned unit. The incumbent will operate end‑dump trucks from 2 to 10 cu.

yards, with either automatic or manual transmission, and equipped with snow plows and sanders; may also operate front‑end loaders, motor graders, snow blowers, equipment trailers, rear & side flail mowers, slope mowers and other related vehicles while performing stated duties. Accomplishes tasks normally performed by the assigned unit, such as paving, shoulder grading, mowing, ditch cleaning, dig outs, pavement patching, repair or replacement of guide markers, signs, fence, guardrail, clean culverts, traffic control, litter pick up, maintenance of roadside rest areas and state buildings/facilities.

Eligibility for hire may be determined by your score on the Caltrans Equipment Operator II exam. For those who do not have current eligibility (e.g., transfer, permissive reinstatement, or voluntary demotions) and/or who will be new to state civil services employment, you must be on the state examination list to be eligible for these positions. Working Conditions

Position located at 59570 Hwy. 3, Trinity Center, Trinity County. The scheduling for this crew is 4/10’s in the summer months, and 5/8’s in the winter months. Required to work in a wide range of sometimes extreme conditions, including heat up to 120 degrees, cold to –15 degrees, strong winds, rain, sleet, and snow. Will be required to work overtime, nights and weekends due to storms, emergencies, special work projects, or when the Supervisor deems that it is in the best interest of the State.

Personal safety requirements include:

  • Work boots, in good and sturdy condition, must be worn to provide foot and ankle support protection.
  • Either long or short sleeve shirts provided by Caltrans, or a safety vest is to be worn over non‑safety shirts or coats.
  • Long pants. No shorts or cutoffs.
  • Provided safety gear; hard hat, safety glasses, hearing protection devices, face shields, gloves, respirator, chaps, or other safety gear must be worn when required by the Department.

This is a designated travel crew and requires working out of town up to 80% of the time.
