The Special Education Teacher will teach a varied population of students in a full day non‑public setting. The Teacher implements the program as outlined in the IEP of each student, adapting instruction to differing academic, medical, developmental, and technological needs of the students and adheres to the curriculum as identified by MSDE. Additionally, the Teacher demonstrates understanding of and commitment to the KKI mission, helping students achieve their potential and participate as fully as possible in family, school and community life while striving to excel in providing safe and effective care of the highest quality.
Southern Maryland Campus of Kennedy Krieger School program serves students in grades K‑8 who are working toward a high school diploma and students aged 5‑21 who are seeking a certificate of completion. We are a nonpublic special education day program operating on an 11‑month program schedule.
Responsibilities- Maintain a classroom environment that is conducive to learning and orderly. Ensure classroom staff and students are managed effectively.
- Collaborate with parents, guardians, classroom staff, student team members, and IEP team members and participate in the professional learning community.
- Communicate effectively with students, staff, and parents, including facilitation of meetings and in‑services, with consideration for disability‑based needs.
- Use appropriate special education best practices and strategies, creating engaging lesson plans, integrating technology, and utilizing data to inform instruction.
- Plan and prepare using data from IEP goals, assessments, and student strengths, developing measurable short and long‑term plans aligned with content, curriculum, and state standards.
- Participate in school‑based committees, special projects, and provide mentorship to colleagues as appropriate.
- Eligibility for MSDE Special Education Certificate in Infant‑Grade 3, Grades 1‑8, or 6‑Adult, based on the teacher’s assignment, required.
- Special Education Teacher I requires a Bachelor’s Degree in Special Education or appropriate content area.
- Special Education Teacher II requires a Master’s Degree in Special Education or appropriate content area.
- Special Education Teacher III requires a Master’s Degree plus 30 additional academic credits.
- Special Education Teacher IV requires a Master’s Degree plus 60 or more additional academic credits (may include PhD/EdD).
- PCM training will be provided; employees must achieve and maintain certification at the Practitioner level or higher.
Previous teaching experience is preferred, but not required.
Compensation$52,480.00 per year – $ per year.
