THEU.S. LITIGATION TEAM
Since its founding in 2017, IRAP’s U.S. Litigation Department has challenged refugee admission bans, litigated protections for Special Immigrant Visa applicants, fought for family reunification, and secured protection for endangered groups, including a recent postponement of the termination of Temporary Protected Status for more than 6,000 Syrians. Our work spans Administrative Procedure Act challenges, class actions, mandamus cases, FOIA litigation, and constitutional questions.

As a key member of the Legal Leadership Team, the U.S. Litigation Deputy Director will help lead IRAP’s systemic change efforts through impact litigation. You will develop and supervise litigation in a team of highly skilled, energetic, and committed immigrant rights litigators, reporting to the U.S. Litigation Senior Director.
Responsibilities- Litigation and Programmatic Work of the U.S. Litigation Department
- Support the Senior Director in overseeing the department’s programmatic work to ensure strategies are effective, responsive to client needs, and aligned with IRAP’s strategic plan.
- Maintain a caseload of litigation matters, providing leadership in case development, strategy, and briefing.
- Organize retreats, team meetings, and events to promote team-building and coordination.
- Supervision and Departmental Professional Development
- Directly supervise Litigation attorneys, fellows, supervising attorneys, and/or non‑attorney staff.
- Help ensure mentoring and professional development opportunities are available to all team members.
- Lead and participate in hiring, oversee annual reviews, and respond to other staff needs in coordination with the Senior Director.
- Support a positive daily work experience and create an equitable, inclusive work culture.
- Coordination and Fundraising
- Participate in meetings and events related to fundraising and donor cultivation.
- Collaborate with communications, policy, and direct services to develop systemic change strategies.
- Coordinate with operations to ensure Litigation staff have necessary resources and support.
- Other responsibilities as assigned by the Senior Director or organizational leadership.
- An Expert in federal court litigation and its intersection with U.S. policy, media narratives, and community advocacy for immigrant and refugee rights.
- A Creative Specialist in innovative litigation approaches, with sound judgment on ethical issues.
- An Enthusiastic Champion of civil/human rights, with at least 7 years of federal litigation experience and knowledge of refugee/immigration law.
- A U.S.
-based attorney licensed to practice in the state where the position is performed. - A Thoughtful Relationship Builder with a record of working with community-based partners.
- An advocate for client empowerment who works effectively across teams and with diverse cultural backgrounds, including LGBTI clients, people with disabilities, and survivors of trauma.
- A compassionate manager who leverages individuals’ strengths, fosters collaboration, and has experience coaching attorneys, fellows, and students in litigation.
- A Strategist who collaborates with leadership to set priorities and pursue impact opportunities.
- A DEI Advocate who applies an anti‑racist/anti‑oppression lens to create inclusive teams.
- A Skilled Project Manager who manages complex projects, multitasks, prioritizes, and operates with high attention to detail and technology proficiency.
- A Compelling Writer and Communicator with excellent oral and written English skills.
