Position: Equipment Operator I

Overview

MAY BE ELIGIBLE FOR $1,500 SIGN-ON BONUS

Operates heavy equipment and performs a variety of routine manual labor tasks to facilitate the maintenance and upkeep of County roads; performs other duties as assigned.

Full salary range for this position is $41,371 - $71,282

Responsibilities

Operates dump truck and other heavy equipment to accomplish tasks as assigned;

Removes snow and applies chemicals;

Removes and trims trees along roadsides;

Maintains vehicles, equipment, and machinery when necessary;

Operates dump truck and heavy equipment to facilitate the removal of trash;

Lay asphalt;

Performs a variety of manual labor tasks;

Performs other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Education and Experience:

High school diploma or G.E.D.;

Six months or more of related experience;

Or equivalent technical training, education, and/or experience.

Additional Requirements

Must successfully complete a pre-employment physical to determine ability to perform job-related functions;

May be required to provide on-call emergency services;

Position is classified as safety-sensitive and shall be subject to drug and alcohol testing as required under federal regulations;

Must have a Maryland Class B Commercial Driver’s License or the ability to obtain one within 6 months from date of employment.

Physical and Environmental Conditions

Work demands constant physical effort. For example, handling moderately heavy tools, equipment, or materials over 60 pounds and walking or standing 60%+ of the time.

Work involves risks or discomforts which require special safety precautions, e.g., working around moving parts, or machines. Employees may be required to use protective gear such as boots and gloves; may require working in adverse weather conditions.

Essential Skills and Knowledge

Ability to gain working knowledge of St. Mary’s County Government policies and procedures;

Ability to safely operate a motor vehicle and various heavy equipment;

Knowledge of safety regulations and established procedures for operating equipment as well as for ensuring public safety;

Basic knowledge of machinery and vehicle maintenance;
