United Nations Environment Programme Date Posted :

The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) is the leading global environmental authority that sets the global environmental agenda, promotes the coherent implementation of the environmental dimension of sustainable development within the United Nations system and serves as an authoritative advocate for the global environment. UNEP’s Ecosystem Division drives conservation, restoration and sustainable use of ecosystems to achieve benefits for nature and people: today and future generations.

The division works with Member States and partners to strengthen resilience by providing policy and technical support to catalyze sustainable social and economic transformation for biodiversity, people and peace. The Associate Programme Management Officer will operate in the framework of the  Resilient Mountains  project including its “Adaptation at Altitude  and “Mountains Adapt” components and other related activities focusing on the nexus between nature and climate action in mountain ecosystems and will contribute in providing assistance in support of the implementation of the aforementioned project (components) and related activities with a particular focus on the South Caucasus region and other mountain ecosystems across the world, also closely liaising with UNEP´s relevant Divisions, Regional Office for Europe and its Vienna Programme office as well as other partners within the UN system.

“Adaptation at Altitude” project (component) The overall objective of the Adaptation at Altitude (A@A) programme (led by the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation) is to increase understanding on how the climate–land-use interactions are impacting tropical mountain biodiversity and ecosystem functions and appropriate conservation, restoration, sustainable use, adaptation and nature-based solutions in mountains and feed it into science-policy platforms for informed decision-making in national, regional and global policy processes, to increase the resilience and adaptive capacity of mountain communities and ecosystems to land uses and climate change.

UNEP has been selected to lead the work under Outcome 2 to support regional policy action in the South Caucasus and East Africa as well as the inter-regional level. Strengthening South-South and regional cooperation and concrete action is furthermore seen as an effective catalyzer for adequate policy integration of mountain adaptation at national levels. “Mt Adapt” project (component) Further complementing the work on adaptation in mountain areas, the Austrian Federal Ministry for Climate Action decided to support the Mountains ADAPT project, coordinated by UNEP, with the aim that innovative mountain adaptation nature-based solutions are widely known among targeted stakeholders and are implemented through a newly established small grants funding scheme to support needs-based and context-specific adaptation financing.

Following the successful first phase, a small grants funding scheme for flexible and easily accessible financing of mountain adaptation solutions is rolled‑out further supported by targeted capacity‑building and training measures. This post is located in the Biodiversity, People and Landscapes Unit in the Biodiversity and Land Branch (BLB), Ecosystems Division, at the Vienna duty station (hosted at Vienna Programme Office).

Under overall direction of Branch and Unit Head and direct supervision of the Mountain Team Leader, the incumbent will be responsible for the following duties:
