The Executive Director serves as the chief administrative and strategic leader of the
Starcross Monastic Community. Working closely with the Board of Directors, the Executive
Director is responsible for safeguarding Starcross's core mission: serving as a spiritual
sanctuary for people and nature, fostering a community of intentional living, and
maintaining its legacy of social justice and environmental stewardship.
This role requires a unique blend of traditional nonprofit business acumen—such as
financial stewardship, human resources, and fundraising with a deep appreciation for
contemplative practice, land conservation, and organic agriculture (including the
community’s 91-acre property and organic olive orchards).
Key Responsibilities1. Strategic Leadership & Mission Alignment
- Partner with the Board of Directors to articulate and implement a long-term strategic vision that preserves the historical legacy of Starcross while steering its modern
- Ensure that all programs, daily operations, and public engagements align with the core values of simple living, multi-faith spiritual inclusion, and hospitality.
- Serve as a bridge between the core community residents, volunteers, visitors, and external networks.
- Oversee all financial assets, including budget development, tracking, and fiscal
- Lead diversified fundraising campaigns, including managing relations with individual donors, soliciting foundation grants, and managing capital campaigns.
- Provide oversight for Starcross's social enterprise operations, specifically The Starcross Shop and its certified organic olive oil production.
3. Operations, Legal Compliance & Land Preservation
- Supervise daily corporate operations, including staffing, HR practices, and vendor contract agreements.
- Maintain compliance with all local, state, and federal 501(c)(3) regulatory frameworks.
- Coordinate with environmental partners to strictly adhere to the property's conservation easement, ensuring the absolute protection of the 91 acres of redwood forests and organic farmland.
4. Community Relations & Public Ambassadorship
- Serve as the primary spokesperson and chief external voice for Starcross to elevate its visibility and community impact.
- Cultivate partnerships with regional nonprofit networks, multi-faith coalitions, and environmental groups.
- Oversee digital and print communication strategies, including the website, newsletters, and social media presence.
- Experience:
Minimum of 3-5 years of progressively responsible nonprofit leadership experience - Mission Match: A demonstrated affinity for spiritual exploration, mindfulness, environmentalism, or intentional/monastic communities.
- Business Acumen:
Background in nonprofit accounting, budget development, financial reporting, and compliance. - Fundraising History:
Track record of successful donor development and grant acquisition. - Management:
Strong interpersonal and supervisory skills, with an ability to manage diverse teams of staff, volunteers, and multi-faith practitioners. - Location:
Ability to work on-site in Sonoma County, CA
