Job SummaryProvides nursing care to patients under the direction of a Registered Nurse andership or advanced practice provider. Utilizes observational skills to monitor nursing interventions and assists medical staff to ensure optimal care within established policies, procedures, and standards. Performs duties in accordance with legal scope of practice and organizational standards, upholding the Mission, Vision, and Strategic Plan of Kaiser Permanente.
Essential Responsibilities- Exhibits excellent customer relations with patients, visitors, providers, and co‑workers; demonstrates courtesy, compassion, and respect.
- Provides therapeutic patient care in accordance with orders from physicians, advanced practice providers and/or registered nurses within scope of practice.
- Transcribes physician/advanced practice provider orders and follows policy.
- Communicates with registered nurses to institute changes in the plan of care and contributes to nursing care plan development.
- Administers specified medication accurately according to provider orders or standing orders within scope of practice.
- Performs treatments such as urinary catheterizations, IV catheter placements, bladder irrigations, suctioning, throat irrigations, enemas, and other equipment‑related procedures, adhering to infection prevention protocols.
- Maintains high standards of disinfection, point‑of‑use, and peel‑pack policies.
- Collects vital signs, wound care, instructs patients on self‑care procedures, obtains specimens, and ensures correct culture collection.
- Assists with examinations and treatments by passing instruments, providing support and restraint, draping, and other required assistance.
- Measures and documents patient condition, recognising significant findings, initiating appropriate emergency procedures, and reporting to RN/APP in a timely manner.
- Assists with IV flow rate maintenance, notifying RN/APP of issues; may discontinue IV therapy except during intra‑cath or central venous lines.
- Assists with venipuncture/blood withdrawal ascertained by certification.
- Collects and processes specimens per policy and protocols.
- Delivers uncomplicated teaching sessions in line with RN/APP/physician education plans; identifies learning needs and discharge barriers.
- Ensures cleanliness of nursing moduleiclo, patient exam rooms, and proper functioning of equipment.
- Uses effective verbal and non‑verbal communication techniques.
- Performs duties in other departments/modules as assigned by department or nursing administration.
- Completes back‑office workflows, including proactive office encounters, closing care gaps, patient outreach, and nurse visits.
- Participates in staff meetings and in‑service programs.
- Assists in ordering, stocking, and distribution of supplies and equipment.
- Accepts verbal and telephone orders from physicians/APPs.
- Supports patient communication management and message handling (emails, call center, other back‑office messages).
- Administers pulse oximetry, humidification therapy, spirometry, oxygen therapy, suctioning, and sputum induction.
- Documents care in Health Connect per policy and protocols.
- Performs other duties as assigned, including new employee orientation and discharge coordination.
- Promotes customer service improvement and ensures consistency with the organization’s philosophy of extraordinary care.
- Supports compliance with Kaiser Permanente Phen code of conduct, upholds privacy/confidentiality, meets federal, state, and local regulations, accreditation, and licensure requirements.
- Age‑related competencies:
Assesses and validates skills for working with specific age groups (infants, adolescents, elderly, etc.).
- Minimum 12 months of direct patient care LVN experience within the last 3 years (medical office, acute care, home care, or skilled nursing facility).
- High School Diploma or GED
- Vocational Nurse License (California)
- Basic Life Support
- Exceptional customer relations and quality service are critical.
- Bilingual (English/Spanish) Level II required.
- Must successfully pass or have passed the bilingual test within the last 12 months or be active in the QBS program.
- IV Certification and Blood Withdrawal Certification preferred.
- Ability to lift up to 35 pounds.
- May support KP Membership fairs.
- May include Saturdays and Sundays.
- May include travel.
