Position: ICU Veterinary Nurse (Overnight Shift)
Location: Soquel

Overview

Pet Vet Care Centers is seeking an ICU Veterinary Nurse (Overnight Shift) to join their Pacific and Santa Cruz Veterinary Specialists team. The practice is committed to improving the lives of animals and people by delivering exceptional and compassionate care at every stage.

Responsibilities
  • Prepare for shift by rounding with the previous ICU technician to familiarize yourself with all ICU patients and provide care, treatment, assessment, and monitoring.
  • Monitor patient charts and complete treatments, including preparing medications (oral and injectable), obtaining diagnostic samples, and ensuring accurate, timely entry of all information in the patient records.
  • Monitor vitals, alert the doctor to major changes, and input progress notes to communicate updates to the care team.
  • Place and monitor IV catheters, assess related complications, and document IVC activity.
  • Perform diagnostics (blood pressure, hematology, chemistry panels, urinalysis, imaging, etc.) and ensure proper collection techniques and handling.
  • Perform calculations for CRIs, fluid therapy, drug dosages, and IV fluid administration.
  • Assist the doctor with treatments including NG/NE tubes, catheters, urinary devices, oxygen therapy, and telemetry monitoring as needed.
  • Rapidly respond to emergencies, participate in CPR/code procedures under the supervision of a DVM, and assist with airway management and emergency medications.
  • Ensure efficient ICU workflow, complete treatments on time, and maintain a clean, organized environment for the next shift.
  • Prepare patients for discharge when directed, ensure medications and instructions are provided, and manage client communication as appropriate.
  • Maintain equipment readiness for emergencies and ensure inventory is stocked for all shifts.
Qualifications
  • RVT or equivalent; minimum 3-5 years of critical care, intensive care, and emergency experience.
  • Knowledge of patient care procedures, medical supply management, and laboratory testing; ability to run CPRs and support DVMs.
  • Proficiency with veterinary instruments, sterilization techniques, and treatment procedures; ability to assist with a range of ICU and surgical support tasks.
  • Skills in TPR/physical assessment, drug administration and dosage calculations, venipuncture, catheter placement (venous and urinary), cystocentesis (including ultrasound guidance), CPR, radiology, anesthesiology, post-surgical care, and basic in-house diagnostics (CBC, chemistry, UA, etc.).
  • Experience with monitoring equipment (Doppler, Cardell, SpO2, ECG, IV pumps, anesthesia machines, crash carts) and infection control for zoonotic diseases.
  • Strong customer service and communication skills for client updates.
Physical and Working Conditions
  • Ability to lift and carry animals up to 100 lbs with team assistance; extended walking or standing and persistent working in a bent position.
  • Exposure to odors, noises, bites, scratches, and animal waste; potential exposure to contagious diseases.
Compensation and Culture

Pay Range: $23–$30 USD per hour.
