American Conservation Experience, a nonprofit Conservation Corps, in partnership with the US Forest Service, is seeking 5 forestry team members to contribute to timber resource management projects alongside Tahoe National Forest Staff.

May 18th, 2026 (05/18/26). Estimated End:
Fall 2026. 16‑week minimum commitment is required.
Location:
Lake Tahoe area, Yuba River Ranger District offices in Camptonville, CA and Nevada City, CA.
ACE Member will be part of a small marking crew performing timber sale preparation (TSP) duties: 45% timber marking, 20% timber cruising, 25% sale layout, 10% office work, meetings, training.
Field work requires moderate to strenuous physical exertion, walking, bending, climbing under adverse conditions for long periods. Potential risk of falls, insect bites, contact with poisonous plants. Duties conducted during rain, snow, wind, dust, extreme heat and cold. Hardhat, gloves, safety equipment provided.
Project Objectives- Apply silvicultural prescriptions and marking guides to designate timber for harvest.
- Notify responsible individuals of ground situations inconsistent with guidelines.
- As a certified or supervised timber cruiser, apply cruise plan, take/record measurements, assess quality, determine defects; prepare cruise data.
- Observe and report possible archaeological significance and sightings of sensitive, threatened, or endangered wildlife.
- GPS harvest unit boundaries and determine site area.
- Planning and judgments affect long‑term timber management, resources, and the forest health agreement/contract.
- Accuracy affects residual resource values such as timber stands, visual quality, water quality.
Monday‑Thursday, ~7:00 am‑5:30 pm. Occasional Fridays if necessary.
Position BenefitsLiving Allowance: $810 /week (40 hrs/week), dispersed bi‑weekly.
Housing: Member responsible; housing may be available that day bunk rate $7‑$20/day; up to $280/week allowance; local candidates encouraged.
Gear Allowance: $500 for new members, $250 for returning members; eligibility approved by ACE & Forest Service.
Training/Orientation: Position‑specific training and orientation; up to $500 for approved training/professional development.

Required- Authorized to work in United States (no visa sponsorship).
- Professional, positive, enthusiastic representation of ACE and partner.
- Ability to work independently and as a team member.
- Valid driver’s license and insurable record; must be 21+ to drive.
- Willing to undergo and pass criminal history checks.
- Perform essential duties with or without reasonable accommodation.
- Complete bi‑weekly timesheets, feedback forms, and evaluations.
- Do not engage in prohibited activities as per Member Service Agreement.
- View eligibility info on ACE website.
- Degree in Forestry or Environmental/Natural Science (not required).
- Knowledge of forest practices, silvicultural prescriptions, aerial photos, maps, environmental reports, and hole checks.
- Working knowledge of measuring tree diameters/ heights, map reading, compass use, species identification, defect recognition, GPSing.
- Knowledge of timber cruise computer programs.
- Knowledge of wildlife management or archaeology.
- Ability to hike remote, steep, rocky terrain under adverse weather.
- Deep interest in public land management.
- Frequent sitting, standing, walking, hiking, carrying, using hands, reaching, talking, hearing; manual dexterity; stoop, kneel, climb stairs, crouch.
- Vision: close, distance, peripheral and depth perception.
- Weight lifted: up to 20 lbs frequently, up to 50 lbs.
- Primarily outdoor; sometimes indoor; variable weather.
- Noise: moderate to high from chainsaws and tools.
- Travel: moderate driving time 1‑2 h one‑way.
May encounter extreme heat or cold, rocky terrain, swamp/wetland, biting insects, dangerous wildlife, bees, beetle‑killed and fire‑killed trees. Expected to conduct duties safely.
Vehicle and Equipment Use/SafetyVehicle provided by Forest Service or ACE if required. Tools provided. Certified operators may use chainsaws. PPE mandatory. Follow Forest Service and ACE protocols.
