Job Description
The Senior Agricultural Technician performs all phases of cultural practices, including operation of specialized livestock and farm equipment, provides research project support, monitors pasture conditions, and assists with livestock movements. Responsibilities include installation, maintenance, and operation of irrigation systems and pesticide/chemical applications. The position is responsible for maintaining records of tasks performed.

The Sierra Foothill Research and Extension Center is 5,700 acres of grazed rangeland that supports research and extension programs focused on beef cattle and natural resource themes relevant to the Sierra foothills.

This position is a career appointment that is 100% fixed.

Pay Scale: $23.56/hour to $28.14/hour

Key Responsibilities
  • 60% Operations Support
    - Responsible for irrigation of pastures using flood and sprinkler techniques. Regulates water flow, ensures uniform irrigation and pesticide applications, cleans ditches, repairs sprinklers, and maintains schedules and records.
    - Evaluate forage conditions and pastures, feed cattle, inspects water sources.
    - Assist with administering preventative medicines and other husbandry practices which may include euthanasia.
    - Move cattle from pasture to pasture or from remote fields to corrals; sort, weigh or otherwise manage cattle for research and management purposes.
    - Plan, schedule and coordinate all activities with supervisor.
    - Construct, repair, and perform maintenance on all fencing structures and corrals.
    - Select, set up and operate appropriate equipment and implements to achieve research project and Center goals.
    - Perform pesticide applications including pesticides and fertilizers.
    - Perform installation, maintenance and operation of irrigation systems.
    - Maintain records for tasks performed such as irrigation logs, pasture conditions, and livestock movements.
  • 20% Research Support/Record Keeping
    - Assist with research data collection from cattle or pastures.
    - Record and maintain data involving irrigation management and scheduling, cattle management and research, cattle feeding and health, body condition, and pasture movements.
    - Assist on projects following research protocols.
  • 20% Facility Maintenance
    - Perform minor and routine maintenance of animal handling facilities, equipment and scales.
    - Schedule and facilitate maintenance of animal handling vehicles.
    - Clean and disinfect cattle transportation equipment and cattle working facilities.
    - Perform minor repairs to gates, corrals, and stock water facilities.
    - Report to supervisor the need for minor or major repairs and/or changes.
    - Conduct other ranch and research tasks as needed.
  • Requirements
    • High school diploma or equivalent experience.
    • Ability to read, write and perform basic arithmetic calculations.
    • Experience with a demonstrated ability to operate heavy and/or complex agricultural and livestock equipment.
    • Horsemanship skills to gather and work cattle in steep and wooded areas.
    • Skills to use common hand and power tools to repair fences and corrals.
    • Ability to work in a team environment in tasks such as gathering/processing cattle, verbal and written communication, and operations with heavy equipment.
    • Skills using computer systems including Word, Excel, Access, Outlook, and other computer programs.
    • Ability to follow verbal and written instructions to complete tasks and meet project specifications.
    • Ability to follow all safety procedures to maintain a safe work environment.
    • Ability to follow pesticide label instructions.
    Preferred Skills
    • Skills to operate farm, hand and power equipment safely and properly.
    • Ability to take directions and work independently on operation tasks.
    • Knowledge to recognize conditions around cattle working facilities or transportation equipment that may be dangerous to workers or livestock.
    • Knowledge of pasture characteristics to make recommendations regarding cattle pasture movements.
