Alternative Fuels Product Engineer

GFI, a Westport Fuel Systems company, designs and manufactures a comprehensive product mix of alternative fuel components for applications in the light and heavy-duty vehicle and industrial segments globally. This product mix includes Hydrogen (H2) components such as pressure regulators, tank valves, PRD's, PRV’s, shutoff valves and integrated systems for a wide range of automotive and non-automotive applications, including Fuel Cell vehicles.
Position Purpose
The Alternative Fuels Product Engineer supports the design, development, validation, and launch of hydrogen (H2) and compressed natural gas (CNG) components for global vehicle and industrial applications. This role contributes to Westport Fuel Systems’ growth in the alternative fuels market by delivering reliable, compliant, and cost‑effective product solutions through hands‑on engineering, testing, and cross‑functional collaboration.
Role Responsibilities
Design tasks for assigned H2 & CNG projects, from concept generation, through development, to production optimization, product launch and field support
Design tasks for electronic shut-off valves and proportional valves for use in H2 and CNG applications
Improve and cost reduce existing products
Participate & lead when necessary the planning and execution of product validation (DVP&R)
Benchmark existing internal and competitor’s components and systems
Analyze internal test data to iterate/improve designs.
Process field issue data to determine root cause and improve design
Provide technical support to purchasing, production, customer service and quality assurance
Conduct development testing in a lab environment, analyze data and document results.

Ds, working closely with the cross functional team
Create and update DFMEA’s
Understand and apply APQP principles
Prepare and present technical presentations for internal and external customers
Health & Safety Responsibilities
Promote Westport’s H&S culture following all Environmental, and H&S procedures and understanding your obligations and responsibilities
Report unsafe conditions, behaviors and all accidents
Co‑operate with JHSC (Joint Health & Safety Committee) and Safety representative
Position Requirements
Effective communication skills & ability to work within a team
Organized and ability to drive issue resolution
Demonstrated ability to work in a fast‑paced, deadline driven environment
Experience with Solid Works is considered an asset
Demonstrated experience creating detailed 2D drawings using GD&T
Experience with Product Data Management (PDM) systems such as Solid Works EPDM is considered an asset
Experience with design of high-pressure components/valves/actuators is considered an asset
Experience with design of electronic shut off valves and proportional valves is considered an asset
Understanding of industry & regulatory requirements is considered an asset
Tier 1 or Tier 2 Automotive experience is an asset
Places importance on attention to detail and maintaining high quality standards
Capable of working in a pro‑active manner with minimal supervision
Ability to respond to frequent demands in order to meet deadlines
Physical Requirements / Working Conditions
This position performs some sedentary office work and requires the ability to move throughout the building to interact with others. This position uses a computer terminal to access, input and retrieve data. This position may occasionally require travel (
