The Role
Performs preventive, demand, and corrective maintenance in all facets of building envelope, building systems, and groundskeeping not requiring a trade at corporate facilities and sites, including social housing, waste management, museums and libraries, transit, paramedic services, emergency services training and research, transportation, administration, children’s centres, and police.
Duties/Responsibilities
Operates, troubleshoots, inspects, assesses, and performs general maintenance and repairs on building envelope and building systems not requiring trade certification (e.g., heating, ventilation, air conditioning, air filters, fan belts, electric motors, exhaust system, humidifiers/dehumidifiers, dust collection, sump pumps).
Inspects and makes minor repairs to electrical and plumbing systems and building interior structures not requiring trade certification (e.g., lights and ballasts, switches, outlets, faucets, toilets, screens, handrails, roofs, eaves troughs, rain leaders, building systems, caulking, drywall). Considers period accuracy in historic buildings.
Performs grounds maintenance (e.g., grass, trees, shrubs, snow, fencing, litter, parking lots).
Uses hand tools, table saws, and landscape equipment (e.g., tractors).
Organizes, sets up, and cleans up work sites to ensure the safety and comfort of clients, tenants, co‑workers, and the public.
Reports conditions for investigation/correction to management. Provides recommendations for preventive maintenance to supervisor and participates to provide solutions/alternatives when evaluating issues.
Responds to emergencies (e.g., leaks, fires, vandalism, infestations) and assists as directed.
Sets up/takes down for programs/events (e.g., displays, props, tents, staging).
Assists to maintain documentation for building assets (e.g., standards, condition, inventory, maintenance/repair history).
Secures and maintains tools, equipment, and vehicles in safe, sound working condition, and reports issues to management.
Gets price quotes and makes purchases from suppliers (with a p-card).
Exchanges information with other divisional staff and contractors. Discusses work requests with clients and tenants. Has contact with the public regarding work being performed.
Performs related duties as assigned.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Working knowledge of general building maintenance and building trades/disciplines, and skill in residential plumbing and electrical repair not requiring trade certification, acquired through a grade 12 education plus 3 years of directly related experience.
