Dorchester County Public Schools is currently accepting applications for potential Art Teacher openings that may become available for the 2025 - 2026 school year at all levels. Working under the direction of the school principal and the content supervisor, this position works with students in decision making, interpersonal development, and academic growth by providing the strategies, resources, and instruction to enable each student to meet the demands of the Maryland College and Career Readiness Standards.
The Art Teacher will be responsible for:
- Planning a program of study that meets the needs, interests and abilities of individuals to ensure Success for Every Student;
- Meeting and instructing assigned classes in the locations and at the times designated;
- Creating a classroom environment that provides for student involvement in the learning process and enables each student to achieve learning objectives;
- Providing an instructional program to meet the needs of all students including students with disabilities;
- Preparing for classes assigned, and showing written evidence of preparation upon request of immediate superior;
- Guiding the learning process toward the achievement of curriculum goals and establishing clear objectives for all lessons, units, projects and the like to communicate these objectives to students;
- Establishing learning objectives consistent with appraisal of student needs, requirements of DCPS curriculum framework, and knowledge of human growth and development;
- Planning for and utilizing instructional methods, resources and evaluation techniques which motivate and enable each student to achieve learning objectives;
- Diagnosing the learning disabilities of students on a regular basis, seeking the assistance of central staff as required. Providing input when necessary to student IEP's;
- Taking all necessary and safety precautions to protect students, equipment, materials and facilities;
- Maintaining accurate and complete records as required by law, DCPS policy and administrative regulation;
- Assisting the administration in implementing all policies and rules governing student life and conduct and, for the classroom, developing reasonable rules of classroom behavior and procedure, and maintaining order in the classroom in a fair and just manner;
- Making provision for being available to students and parents for education-related purposes outside the instructional day when required or requested to do so under reasonable terms;
- Establishing relationships with colleagues, students, parents and community which reflect recognition of and respect for every individual;
- Planning and supervising purposeful assignments for instructional assistants, teacher assistants, and volunteers. May evaluate assistant's job performance with department heads and/or administrators;
- Appraising his/her own effectiveness and demonstrating successful application of skills and information acquired to increase effectiveness. Striving to maintain and improve professional competence;
- Participating in school management and sharing responsibility for the total school program;
- Attending staff meetings and serving on staff committees as required;
- Performing other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
- Possess, or be eligible for, a Maryland State Department of Education teaching certificate;
- Possess a Bachelor's degree or higher from an accredited college or university;
- Knowledge of Dorchester County Public Schools curriculum, techniques for integrating curriculum, Dorchester County Public Schools policies, and effective instructional practices;
- Ability to provide instruction that reflects multiple perspectives and multi-cultural education;
- Ability to infuse technology into curriculum;
- Proficiency in the Maryland Teacher Technology Standards;
- Possess an understanding of the Maryland Technology Literacy Standards for Students;
- Ability to communicate and work effectively with administrators, colleagues, central office and school based staff, students, parents and community; and
- Excellent oral and written communication and human relation skills.
