Job DescriptionWe are seeking a highly skilled and motivated Teaching Assistant to work with the Future Lab, an after‑school program for middle school students in Somerville, MA. Future Lab is a college and career youth development and support program designed to equip students with the skills, confidence, and pathways needed to thrive academically, socially, and in their future careers. The Teaching Assistant will be responsible for supporting the Education and Career Counselors, who are primarily responsible for delivering the curriculum.
The Teaching Assistant will assist in preparing materials, setting up activities, leading small‑group sessions, and providing general support to students in the program. In this role, it is crucial to create a welcoming environment where youth feel supported as they navigate pathways to higher education, skill development, long‑term career opportunities, and lifelong learning.
The program will take place on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays immediately following the end of the school day in Somerville Public Schools. Teaching Assistants will work approximately 10 hours a week.
This is a contract position. Knovva Academy’s office is located in Cambridge, MA, and the school sites are in Somerville, MA. Applicants must be authorized to work in the United States; sponsorship is not being offered at this time.
Responsibilities- Support the Program:
Work directly with the Education and Career Counselors to implement the curriculum. Provide support through leading small group activities, gathering materials, and assisting students with their tasks. - Engage with Youth:
Build trusting relationships through regular communication with students, and offer encouragement and guidance in a supportive and welcoming environment. - Reporting:
Assist in administering surveys to students throughout the program to track progress in SEL, college and career readiness, and other areas of concern. - Community Engagement:
Act as chaperones during occasional field trips during program time, ensuring students travel to and from all locations safely. - Team
Collaboration:
Work closely with the Education and Career Counselors, who will lead the program and are responsible for ensuring the smooth implementation of the curriculum.
- A 2- or 4-year degree in social work, education, counseling, or a related field (or equivalent experience).
- 1-4 years of experience working with middle or high school youth, including experience working with ELL, first‑generation, and low‑income students. Experience working with students with IEPs is a plus.
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills with a demonstrated ability to build rapport and trust.
- Strong problem‑solving skills and proven record for taking ownership of responsibilities.
- Ability to work collaboratively as part of a team while independently managing tasks and responsibilities.
- Experience working in an international and multicultural environment.
- Must have exceptional attention to detail.
- Must be a self‑starter and fast learner.
- Bilingual or multilingual abilities in Spanish, Haitian Creole, and/or Portuguese.
- First aid and CPR certification.
$20-$25 per hour
