Overview

The Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory (SAO) is at the forefront of the scientific exploration of the universe, working in partnership with Harvard College Observatory to form the Harvard‑Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics (CfA). This role provides expert-level electronics and electrical systems engineering support for advanced instrumentation in ground‑based and space‑based astrophysical data collection, including development, testing, calibration, and integration.

Key Responsibilities
  • Apply state‑of‑the‑art knowledge to conceive, plan, and execute complex electrical engineering assignments for advanced instrumentation.
  • Create, design, and oversee development of electrical/electronics systems and subsystems. Provide technical consultation to CfA scientists and engineering staff.
  • Translate scientific objectives into hardware requirements, perform trade‑off analyses, evaluate manufacturer capability data, and prepare cost and schedule estimates.
  • Document work in technical memoranda, reports, test plans, and presentations.
  • Defend proposals to funding agencies and scientific peer review panels, troubleshoot complex technical problems, and recommend solutions.
  • Lead design and analysis from concept through project completion, including technical oversight, budgeting, and liaison with contractors.
  • Investigate, select, and procure critical electrical, electro‑optical, and servo‑mechanical components.
  • Make oral and written presentations, write technical papers, and present at technical symposia.
  • Travel domestically and internationally to telescope sites, vendor facilities, NASA centers, and other associated organizations.
  • Perform other assigned duties as required.
  • Basic Requirements
    • Professional Engineering degree from an ABET‑accredited program or equivalent coursework in the required engineering sciences.
    • OR a combination of education and experience that demonstrates thorough knowledge of physical and mathematical sciences underlying professional engineering.
    • Experience in advanced electronics engineering, including system‑level design, component selection, and integration.
    • Strong communication skills and experience with proposal writing.
    Additional Requirements
    • At least one year of specialized experience at or above the grade 13 level in roles that include architecture of system‑level electrical designs, leading electrical engineering efforts, and supporting project design reviews.
    Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
    • Deep mastery of electronics engineering concepts for ground‑based and space‑borne instrumentation.
    • Advanced circuit design expertise, including analog design, FPGA development, and simulation tools such as SPICE.
    • Proficiency with electrical schematic and board layout CAD/CAM tools.
    • Working knowledge of related engineering fields (thermal, mechanical, optical, structural) to resolve packaging problems.
    • Project leadership and budgeting experience with multiple simultaneous projects.
    • Strong oral and written communication skills; experience serving as a technical spokesperson and proposal writer.
