Overview

The Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory (SAO) is a world‑leading center for optical instrumentation and astrophysics. This position supports the development of complex ground‑based and space‑based optical instruments through senior‑level manufacturing engineering leadership.

Major Duties
  • In collaboration with CfA scientific investigators, conceive, design, and construct highly complex scientific instruments, support structures, optical systems, mechanisms, and test equipment.
  • Provide expert technical consultation in instrument mechanical design, state‑of‑the‑art mechanisms, materials selection, fabrication, and assembly methods.
  • Investigate, select, and procure critical mechanical, servo‑mechanical, and optical components for astronomical instrumentation.
  • Conduct detailed structural trades and analyses at the concept and detailed design levels.
  • Actively participate in the assembly of complex instrumentation involving intricate structures, mechanisms, and optics.
  • Document work in technical memoranda, reports, test plans, and procedures.
  • Serve as the project’s mechanical/structural representative to internal and external stakeholders.
  • Travel nationally and internationally as required.
Qualification Requirements
  • Basic Requirements: Professional engineering degree with an accredited curriculum, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Specialized

    Experience:

    At least one year of experience at or above grade 13 in opto‑mechanical assembly design, FEA, optical system integration, and thermal management.
  • Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities: Mastery of mechanical engineering for optical instrumentation, leadership skills, advanced mechanisms expertise, proficiency with design and analysis tools (ANSYS, Solid Works, COMSOL), and strong communication abilities.
