Position Overview

The Nurse Practitioner provides direct patient care to MIT Health patients. This role assesses patients’ health status through interview and physical examination, synthesizes clinical information to formulate health status and diagnosis, develops plans of care and treatment, implements treatment plans, and evaluates follow‑up strategies according to age‑specific plans of care. Work is conducted in accordance with MIT Health Policies as well as State and Federal rules, regulations, and standard of care.

The Nurse Practitioner provides health education, supportive counseling, and clinical outreach to the MIT community in collaboration with other MIT Health professionals and across the MIT Community.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities
  • Functions independently to perform age‑appropriate history and physical exam of patients.
  • Works as a team member in providing high‑quality continuity care of MIT Health’s primary care patients with nursing and other Primary Care Providers.
  • Assesses health status through interview, physical exam, and review of the medical record, and documents findings in the medical record and case presentation.
  • Demonstrates assessment skills for common episodic complaints including infections, musculoskeletal problems, chest pain, headache, abdominal pain, dermatologic issues, mental health concerns, ophthalmologic and respiratory disorders, GI, GU, and GYN complaints.
  • Triages emergencies and coordinates transfer of patients to the emergency room when needed.
  • Synthesizes clinical information from the interview, physical exam, laboratory data, and medical record to differentiate between normal and abnormal findings.
  • Uses clinical judgment and consults with physicians to identify health problems and treatment strategies.
  • Formulates and directs appropriate treatment, including prescription writing, emphasizing a comprehensive approach to the individual and family needs.
  • Orders and interprets diagnostic and therapeutic tests relative to patients’ age‑specific needs.
  • Prescribes appropriate pharmacologic and non‑pharmacologic treatment modalities.
  • Implements interventions to support patients in regaining or maintaining physiological stability; assists with procedural care in accordance with facility, state, and federal regulations.
  • Monitors patient compliance with opioid medication through periodic toxicity screening using the Mass Prescription Awareness Tool, communicates with referring providers, and administers opioid risk assessment questionnaires.
  • Conducts telephone encounters and written correspondence for follow‑up, patient education, and triage as necessary.
  • Documents legibly and timely the subjective and objective data, clinical impressions, and plan of care during patient encounters.
  • Monitors the effectiveness of interventions.
  • Performs all other duties as assigned.
Minimum Required

Education and Experience
  • Master’s Degree in Nursing and graduation from an accredited Nurse Practitioner program (adult patient care).
  • Current Advanced Practice Registered Nurse (APRN) certification.
  • Current provider card in Basic Life Support (BLS).
  • MA Board authorization to practice as an Advanced Practice Nurse.
  • Valid prescriptive authority from both the MA DPH‑DCP and Federal DEA.
  • Written communication:
    Ability to summarize and communicate moderately complex information in varied written formats to internal and external customers.
  • Oral communication:
    Ability to comprehend and communicate complex verbal information in English to staff, patients, families, and external customers.
  • Knowledge:
    Ability to demonstrate in-depth knowledge of concepts, practices, and policies and to apply them in complex varied situations.
  • Team work:
    Ability to collaborate with PAs, Medical Assistants, Physicians, and administrative staff to ensure optimal patient care; must attend departmental meetings as required.
  • Customer service:
    Ability to provide high‑level customer service and staff training to meet standards; resolves service issues promptly and respectfully; responds to patient phone calls within 24 hours during normal business hours.
Pay Range

$125,000 – $150,000 annually. Final salary determined by MIT’s compensation team based on the skills and experience of the person hired.
