Registered Nurse, Primary Care

The Registered Nurse demonstrates the knowledge and skills necessary to provide nursing care to the patient population of their assigned service area. The role provides direct patient care according to age‑specific plans of care that is within the scope of practice of a registered nurse.

The Registered Nurse performs nursing knowledge through the principles of telephone and waiting room triage, utilizing established guidelines to respond to each patient’s needs. The position possesses the ability to easily access data, interpret age‑specific needs, and provide nursing care in collaboration with others. The Registered Nurse also plays a critical role in providing health education, supportive counseling, and clinical outreach to the MIT community in collaboration with other individuals or services at MIT Health.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities
  • Assesses patient’s health status through interview, either over the phone or when patient presents to the Medical Department.
  • Provides skilled nursing interventions and procedures, such as, but not limited to: administration of routine immunizations and other parenteral medications, vital sign monitoring, point of care testing, health education, counseling, advising and anticipatory guidance, etc.
  • Assesses and monitors patients in the waiting area and reports significant findings to Provider.
  • Identifies physical symptoms and assesses patients for pertinent physical findings on examination. Provides urgent nursing care within established protocols and scope of practice as a registered nurse under the direction of nurse practitioners (NP) and/or physicians (MD/DO).
  • Performs appropriate patient triage and facilitates appointment scheduling and follow‑up based on clinical findings.
  • Effectively uses nursing process, clinical judgment, and consultation with other clinicians to identify health problems, treatment strategies, and subsequent nursing care.
  • Formulates and directs appropriate nursing care that emphasizes a comprehensive approach to the needs of the individual and family.
  • Supports providers in their absence by monitoring tasks and tending to items that need immediate and/or timely attention.
  • Establishes priorities for patient care determining if patients need emergent, urgent, same‑day or future appointment for more intense assessment of complaints. Determines the most appropriate level of provider needed to render care.
  • Updates the patient problem list, medications and allergies, as appropriate.
  • Assists with the coordination of patient transport to the emergency room when needed. Provides nursing support to patient services representatives when needed for urgent patient phone calls or when patients arrive.
  • Facilitates multi‑disciplinary consultation and collaboration as needed with providers and other appropriate disciplines to provide comprehensive and optimal patient care.
  • Provides for continuity of care for the patient in collaboration with other health care team members as evidenced by appropriate referrals and follow‑up on outcome of referral or consultation.
  • Collaborates with colleagues to develop, implement, evaluate, and revise guidelines for clinical practice and standards.
  • Coordinates the care of patients in order to provide safe, efficient and timely patient‑centered care.
  • Performs miscellaneous job‑related duties as assigned.
Minimum Required

Education and Experience
  • Graduate of an accredited nursing program. Bachelor’s degree required.
  • Licensure:
    Current RN license in Massachusetts. BLS required; ACLS preferred.
  • Minimum 3 years as a Registered Nurse in an Urgent Care or Emergency Department. Fluency with EMR systems;
    Cerner preferred.
  • Experience with computer systems required, including web‑based applications and some Microsoft Office applications such as Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, or Access.
