Clinical Educator/Staff Nurse – Surgical Services

Job Description Summary

This position combines the responsibilities of a Clinical Educator and a Staff RN. The Clinical Educator provides educational support, including needs assessments, standardized education, and program design based on evidence and policy. The Staff RN delivers general nursing care to patients and families, collaborating with the healthcare team. The role is within the surgical services line and includes two components: 6 FTE (24 hrs/week) Clinical Educator reporting to the System Clinical Education Manager;

2‑0.4 FTE (8‑16 hrs/week) Staff RN reporting to the local Administrative Nurse Manager. Total FTE for the staff portion will be discussed at interview.

Responsibilities and Duties

  • Educator / Facilitator (50%)
    • Integrate adult learning theory, organizational development, and quality management into educational offerings.
    • Apply educational processes: assessment, planning, implementation, and evaluation of program development.
    • Support needs assessment, educational planning, program implementation, and evaluation.
    • Plan, conduct, and evaluate programs to achieve desired competence and critical thinking.
    • Collaborate with Clinical Education Lead, Service Line Leads, Organizational Development, and other educators to create education activities that address age‑specific populations and organizational needs.
    • Analyze and evaluate programs for effectiveness.
    • Assist with orientation for new associates and ongoing education, including in‑services and competency assessment.
  • Staff Nurse (30%)
    • Perform initial and ongoing assessment for the applicable patient population.
    • Collect, analyze, and document subjective and objective data and communicate findings.
    • Delegate tasks to LPN, PSA, and other unlicensed personnel, reviewing data obtained in accordance with criteria and state statutes.
    • Use assessment data to identify nursing diagnoses and collaborative problems.
    • Initiate care plans and document nursing interventions.
    • Initiate and support discharge plans.
  • Change Agent (10%)
    • Implement education on new processes, equipment, and policies.
    • Facilitate and support change through effective communication with associates and management.
    • Participate in committees, task forces, and strategic planning meetings.
  • Project Management / Researcher (10%)
    • Support integration of research into evidence‑based practices.
    • Create an evidence‑based environment to guide education practice.
    • Review and evaluate current research, integrating findings into associate educational programs.
    • Promote associate and manager knowledge and skills in the research process.
    • Set priorities for educational needs and lead performance and practice improvement initiatives.
    • Anticipate and interpret trends to develop programs ensuring quality and cost‑effective practice.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree (Required)
  • BLS – Basic Life Support – American Heart Association
  • RN – Registered Nurse – Ohio Board of Nursing
