Position: Automation & Controls Technician I  (OH, Cambridge)

Summary The Automation & Controls Technician I is responsible for designing, developing, and maintaining automated systems and processes within the organization that meet design, performance, and safety specifications as well as comply with safety standards and regulations. The role involves a combination of technical expertise, problem‑solving skills, and collaboration with cross‑functional teams. The Automation & Controls Technician I plays a crucial role in the design, implementation, and maintenance of automated systems, contributing to increased efficiency, reliability, and safety within industrial processes.

Position Responsibilities
  • Develop and implement Programmable Logic Controller (PLC) programs to control machinery and processes.
  • Design and develop Human Machine Interface (HMI) and Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) systems for monitoring and control.
  • Calibrate and configure instrumentation devices such as sensors, transmitters, and actuators.
  • Set up and configure communication networks for efficient data exchange between control devices.
  • Identify and resolve issues related to automation and control systems.
  • Conduct diagnostics to pinpoint faults and implement corrective actions.
  • Upgrade existing automation systems to improve performance or accommodate changes in requirements.
  • Modify control system configurations as needed.
  • Work closely with Automation & Controls Engineers to understand system requirements and design specifications.
  • Maintain accurate and up-to‑date documentation for control systems, including drawings, schematics, and manuals.
  • Conduct quality control checks on implemented automation solutions to ensure they meet design specifications.
  • Offer technical support and troubleshooting assistance to end‑users.
  • Assist in the commissioning of automation systems, including hardware and software components on‑site.
Other Responsibilities
  • Stay updated on advancements in automation and control technologies.
  • Evaluate and recommend the adoption of new technologies that can enhance system performance.
  • Participate in training programs to enhance skills in programming software and automation/control systems.
  • Provide training to operations and maintenance personnel on the use and maintenance of control systems.
Qualifications

Education and Experience:

  • High School Diploma or GED required. 2‑year engineering degree preferred.
  • Experience in technical roles preferred.
  • ISA Certified Automation Professional (CAP) certification is preferred.
Required Skills
  • Basic understanding of electrical circuits, PLC programming and HMI systems.
  • Basic troubleshooting skills.
  • Ability to work independently and in a collaborative, team environment.
  • Ability to utilize critical thinking methodologies to solve problems.
  • Microsoft Office Applications: proficiency in Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, and Teams.
  • File Management.
Preferred Skills
  • Programmable Logic Controller (PLC) software: proficiency in RSLogix, Logix
    5000, Eco Struxure Control Expert, Crimson, and/or Pro Soft.
  • Human Machine Interface (HMI) software: proficiency in Factory Talk, Wonderware, Vijeo Designer, and/or Citect.
