This is an exciting opportunity for a skilled, self‑motivated and enthusiastic individual to provide professional and efficient equipment organisation and administration service for the Communication Aid Service East of England (CASEE), based at Cambridge University Hospitals (CUH). CASEE is one of 14 regional specialised Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) Services commissioned by NHS England to provide a consistent, equitable AAC Service across England and is managed within the CUH Speech and Language Therapy Service.

Our service works closely with local therapy teams to provide a service to children and adults who are eligible for a specialised AAC assessment across the six counties of the East of England. This is an opportunity to join our specialist multi‑professional team comprising Occupational Therapists, Speech and Language Therapists, Advisory Teacher, Rehabilitation Engineer/Healthcare Scientist, technical team and administrative support team.

Knowledge and experience of assistive technology is desirable, however we welcome applications from people who have an interest in AAC and who are committed to quickly develop the necessary specialist knowledge and skills. Individual personal development needs will be identified and supported. You will work closely with CASEE’s multi‑disciplinary team of clinicians and technical staff to look after the equipment we provide to our patients.

You will be based in the CASEE Office but the post‑holder will visit the Medical Equipment Library (MEL) and other locations in the main hospital building regularly.

Primary responsibilities
  • cataloguing new equipment within the CUH medical equipment database (e‑Quip)
  • ensuring safety checks and asset tagging are completed
  • storing equipment in the MEL and workshop areas safely and efficiently and retrieving items when requested
  • maintaining records of equipment within BEST (CASEE electronic patient record software)
  • monitoring stock and ordering new equipment via Oracle (CUH procurement system)
  • ensuring returned equipment is decontaminated and cleared of data
  • organising couriers to deliver/collect equipment when necessary

At Cambridge University Hospitals, we want to do all we can to support good working days. We offer development opportunities and a wide range of benefits, including on‑site leisure facilities, shopping concourse and day nurseries. Our good work programme currently includes providing reduced cost Stagecoach bus travel to and from Cambridge University Hospital site. Park and Ride bus journeys between Babraham Road and Trumpington sites are free, as is the route to and from Cambridge train station and our hospitals.

We also subsidise the cost of parking on site for eligible staff.

On CUH campus, hot food is available 24/7 and at a reduced cost for colleagues. Recently we launched the first of our staff pod break spaces. Located in the Deakin Centre, we have a purpose‑created colleague‑only café, with free tea and coffee, a break space and private outside area for colleagues to rest, refuel and recharge. Just one of the ways we are working hard to support good working days  is committed to assisting employees in achieving a good work‑life balance irrespective of role or personal circumstances.

Flexible arrangements may include, but are not limited to, part‑time working, job‑share, term‑time working and flexible start and finish times. Please note if you would like to discuss the required hours of this role further, you should approach the contact given. In some cases, alternative working hours will be considered.

The ability to problem solve, use initiative appropriately, prioritise effectively and remain calm and focused under pressure is important as the position can be demanding. Excellent attention to detail, communication and interpersonal skills are a priority as the CASEE service supports people who experience severe communication difficulties and are using alternative methods of communication.
