BPI Senior Research Fellowship :

The BP Institute for Multiphase Flow in the University of Cambridge is delighted to offer a 5 year senior research fellowship to a candidate involved with research in fluid mechanics, interpreted in its broadest sense. The successful candidate will be free to pursue their own research agenda, with the aspiration that their research will relate to multiphase fluid mechanics. Candidates with interests in Earth Sciences, Applied Mathematics or Chemistry and with skills in theoretical, experimental or numerical approaches to multiphase fluid mechanics are encouraged to apply.

The successful candidate will likely have made significant contributions to the subject, with important research papers in high quality journals. Applicants should have both doctoral and some post-doctoral experience and be able to demonstrate good communication skills. The level of candidate sought for this position is comparable to those awarded Royal Society Research Fellowships. A small research fund will be available with the position to help the successful candidate initiate their research.

Although this is a research position, there may be opportunities for the successful candidate to become involved in the teaching activities of the University if they wish.

The BPI has an established track record of fundamental research in fluid mechanics, especially relating to challenges in energy and the environment, with a broad range of approaches. The BPI has 5 parent departments in the University, including Earth Science, DAMTP, Chemistry, Chemical Engineering and Biotechnology, and Engineering, and has strong links with industry, including BP plc. We are seeking a candidate to complement the work of the present faculty, but also to build up new collaborations as appropriate ( ).

We particularly welcome candidates who are interested in promoting diversity and equality, including the role of women, in science.

For the application package, you will need to supply (i) a one page curriculum vitae summarising your university education, including results, and other relevant experience; (ii) a two page research proposal; and (iii) copies of the three most significant papers you have authored or co-authored. You will need to provide contact details for 3 referees, the successful candidate must have PhD in a relevant field.

Interviews for short-listed candidates will be held in late January or early February 2019. The interview will include a 30 minute research presentation, a panel interview with the appointment committee, and meetings with a number of the faculty.

The position will run from mid-2019 until mid-2024, with the precise starting date subject to discussion with the successful candidate.

Fixed-term:
The funds for this post are available for 5 years in the first instance.
