Research Scientist, Research Assistant/Associate, Biomedical Science, Postdoctoral Research Fellow
We are seeking an enthusiastic and motivated researcher to join the laboratory of Dr Suzannah Rihn at the Cambridge Institute of Therapeutic Immunology and Infectious Disease (CITIID), University of Cambridge.
Emerging and re-emerging viruses pose a continuing threat to human health. Understanding the molecular mechanisms that enable viruses to cross species barriers, adapt to new hosts and establish infections in humans is essential for improving our preparedness for future epidemics and pandemics. Our research uses a combination of molecular virology, cell biology and experimental models of virus infection to investigate the interactions between viruses and their hosts that determine the potential for viral emergence.
The successful candidate will contribute to an exciting research programme investigating the molecular determinants of viral cross-species transmission. Working as part of a collaborative research team, they will use a range of experimental approaches to investigate how viral and host factors influence infection, replication and adaptation. The project will provide opportunities to develop expertise in molecular virology, including cell culture, molecular cloning, viral reverse genetics and functional assays of virus infection.
The postholder will be expected to plan and conduct experiments, analyse and interpret data, maintain accurate research records and contribute to the preparation of scientific manuscripts and presentations. They will also participate in laboratory meetings, contribute to the wider scientific activities of the group and collaborate with colleagues within CITIID and beyond.
Applicants should have, or be close to obtaining, a PhD in biological, biochemical or biomedical sciences, with relevant experience in molecular biology or virology. We are particularly interested in candidates with experience studying virus infection, a strong background in experimental molecular virology and an emerging track record of scientific publications or presentations. Experience with viral reverse genetics, the handling of replication-competent viruses or small animal models of infection would be advantageous but is not essential.
The successful candidate will be highly motivated, scientifically curious and capable of working both independently and collaboratively. Excellent communication and organisational skills, together with a commitment to rigorous and reproducible research, are essential.
This position offers an opportunity to contribute to research addressing fundamental questions in viral emergence and pandemic preparedness, within the collaborative and interdisciplinary research environment at CITIID.
Fixed-term:
The funds for this post are available for 1 years in the first instance.
Once an offer of employment has been accepted, the successful candidate will be required to undergo a health assessment.
Applicants must have (or be close to obtaining) a PhD.
Appointment at Research Associate level is dependent on having a PhD. Those who have submitted but not yet received their PhD will initially be appointed as a Research Assistant (Grade 5, Point 38 £ 34,610) moving to Research Associate (Grade
7) upon confirmation of your PhD award.
