What you'll be doing

The Lead Design Engineer will develop and assess concept engineering solutions for the transmission network, providing specialist technical guidance and support across a range of engineering disciplines. Working closely with Network Planning, Regulation and Project teams, the role will help shape investment decisions and deliver innovative, value-driven solutions that reduce asset lifecycle costs.

  • Develop and assess concept engineering solutions, including feasibility studies and budget estimates for transmission projects.
  • Ensure designs comply with legislation, company policies and operational requirements.
  • Provide technical support and guidance to project teams throughout project development.
  • Promote the highest standards of health, safety, environmental and quality performance.
  • Collaborate with multi-disciplinary teams to deliver integrated engineering solutions.
  • Monitor industry developments and apply new technologies, equipment and working methods to improve safety, efficiency and cost performance.
  • Review engineering documentation and support the preparation of accurate project budgets.
  • Contribute to the development of engineering standards, policies and best practice.
  • Mentor and support engineers across the wider team.
What you'll bring
  • Degree in Engineering, or HND with significant relevant experience.
  • Chartered Engineer status or working towards chartership.
  • Experience in the design and delivery of electrical infrastructure projects.
  • Strong understanding of transmission network equipment and its operation and maintenance.
  • Experience applying CDM regulations and Health & Safety best practice within a design environment.
  • Knowledge of innovative engineering technologies and sustainable engineering solutions.
  • Experience using BIM within transmission or substation design projects.
  • Technical expertise in one or more areas including substations, switch gear, transformers, overhead lines, cables, protection and control systems.
  • Excellent communication and stakeholder management skills.
  • Strong analytical skills with the ability to solve complex engineering challenges.
Minimum Criteria
  • Engineering Degree or HND with relevant industry experience.
  • Experience in electrical substation or circuit design for infrastructure projects.
  • Full UK driving licence.
