An exciting opportunity has arisen for an enthusiastic and self-motivated Speech and Language Therapist to work at the Royal Free London NHS Foundation Trust.
This post is a permanent rotational Band 5 SLT. The post holder will rotate between Health Services for Elderly People (HSEP) and Acute Neurosciences therapy teams. The rotations occur on a 6 monthly basis.
Speech and Language Therapy is well established in both of these inter-disciplinary therapy teams and the successful applicant will enjoy excellent MDT working within both clinical specialities. Our acute stroke unit has consistently scored an A in the Stroke Sentinel National Audit Programme (SNAPP) for the past 4 years.
Main duties of the jobThe post holder will:
- Be responsible for the assessment, diagnosis and treatment of adult patients on the acute neurosciences/HSEP wards at the Royal Free Hospital.
- Participate in teaching for SLT students and other professionals.
- Opportunity to participate in therapy wide projects and working parties
- Contribute to research and audit
You will be joining a team of 10 other SLT's and will be well supported with access to regular clinical supervision and joint working with the senior SLTs team from each clinical speciality. You will be offered opportunities for Continuing Professional Development (CPD). The Speech and Language Therapy team run both videofluoroscopy and FEES services which you will have an opportunity to observe and refer patients into these clinics.
The therapies team at the Royal Free are truly inter-disciplinary with a strong emphasis on supportive supervision, an active learning environment and a focus on staff welfare and teamwork using the "What matters to you?" framework.

Person Specification Education & professional Qualifications- Degree in Speech and Language Therapy
- Health Care Professions Council (HCPC) registration
- Evidence of CPD in a portfolio relevant to clinical areas in rotations
- Member of the Royal College of Speech-Language Therapists
- Physically fit and able to comply with trust manual handling guidelines
- Ability to negotiate
- Self-motivated and able to motivate others
- Ability to recognise unacceptable behaviour and act on this appropriately
- Demonstrable ability to meet the Trust Values
- Broad experience either as a student or qualified SLT in an acute setting including:
Stroke, Neurology, Elderly Care, Rehab or outpatients, Respiratory or critical care - Experience of presenting to groups
- Evidence of involvement in a project or audit
- Experience of managing own caseload
- Ability to work effectively within a team
- Able to work independently but demonstrating awareness of own limitations
- Able to manage challenging situations calmly and professionally
- Effective clinical reasoning skills
- Ability to reflect on own practice
- Excellent time management and organisational skills
- Ability to prioritise between urgent and routine tasks
- Able to work flexibly
- Ability to communicate effectively in writing, adapting style according to recipient
- Problem solving approach
