About KIPP New Jersey

KIPP New Jersey is part of the nationally recognized “Knowledge Is Power Program” network of free, open‑enrollment, college‑preparatory public schools dedicated to preparing students for success in college and in life. Since 2002, KIPP New Jersey has grown to educate students in grades K‑12 across 18 schools in Newark, Camden, and Paterson, with more than 90% of students qualifying for free or reduced meals.

The Teacher in Residence (TiR) program is designed to give aspiring teachers hands‑on experience and the certification needed to become excellent educators at KIPP’s world‑class schools. As a TiR, you will blend theory and practice, working alongside experienced teachers while earning your teaching certification.

• Work closely with an experienced lead classroom teacher to create lesson plans, teach, reflect on lessons, assess student progress, and use data to inform instruction.
• Build positive relationships with students and families to become part of the school community.
• Provide small‑group instruction.
• Assist with diagnostic and progress‑monitoring testing across the school.
• Communicate consistently with families about student progress.
• Attend and actively participate in professional development opportunities to support continuous growth.

• An interest in working with students from diverse economic and cultural backgrounds.
• A collaborative attitude toward teaching and learning.
• A belief that all students deserve a world‑class education, achievable through education reform.
• The passion and drive to work with students and help them pursue a path to college and beyond.
• Ability to become certified in the State of New Jersey and pass the state licensure exam.
• Some experience working with children.

• Hold a valid teaching certification in NJ – or –
• Meet the GPA Requirement:
• If you graduated after September 2016:
  • Have a bachelor’s or master’s GPA ≥ 3.0 – or –
  • Have a bachelor’s or master’s GPA between 2.75 and 3.0 AND demonstrate that you have passed all required Praxis exams with a +10% passing score (super scores).
• If you graduated before September 2016:
  • Have a bachelor’s or master’s GPA ≥ 2.75.

Salaries are competitive and based on prior experience and certification requirements. For Teacher in Residence positions in Newark, the starting salary is $48,000.
