Job DescriptionThe Teacher in Residence (TiR) program is designed to give aspiring teachers hands‑on experience and the certification needed to become excellent educators at KIPP’s world‑class schools. As a TiR, you will blend theory and practice, working alongside experienced teachers while earning your teaching certification.
Responsibilities- Work closely with an experienced lead classroom teacher to create lesson plans, teach, reflect on lessons, assess student progress, and use data to inform instruction.
- Build positive relationships with students and families to become part of the school community.
- Provide small‑group instruction.
- Assist with diagnostic and progress‑monitoring testing across the school.
- Communicate consistently with families about student progress.
- Attend and actively participate in professional development opportunities to support continuous growth.
- A belief in every student’s limitless potential.
- An interest in working with students from diverse economic and cultural backgrounds.
- A collaborative attitude toward teaching and learning.
- A belief that all students deserve a world‑class education, achievable through education reform.
- The passion and drive to work with students and help them pursue a path to college and beyond.
- Ability to become certified in the State of New Jersey and pass the state licensure exam.
- Some experience working with children.
- Hold a valid teaching certification in NJ – or –
- Meet the GPA Requirement:
- If you graduated after September 2016:
- Have a bachelor’s or master’s GPA ≥ 3.0 – or –
- Have a bachelor’s or master’s GPA between 2.75 and 3.0 AND demonstrate that you have passed all required Praxis exams with a +10% passing score (super scores).
- If you graduated before September 2016:
- Have a bachelor’s or master’s GPA ≥ 2.75.
Salaries are competitive and based on prior experience and certification requirements. For Teacher in Residence positions in Newark, the starting salary is $48,000.
