Summary:

Maintaining and troubleshooting light rail cars, signal system, sub station, and communications systems and equipment components. To be proficient in the diagnosis, correction, and repair of defects and malfunctions in various light rail car‑mechanical, electrical, electronic, logic, pneumatic, hydraulic, and air‑conditioning equipment, signal system train control systems and equipment, sub station control and communications equipment, and in the performance of related duties under the general supervision of the Superintendent or Foreman.

Roles and Responsibilities:
  • Provides technical support in all phases of repair and trouble‑sh‑ooting of light rail car, signal systems train control and sub station control systems and equipment assigned, when necessary.
  • Conducts diagnostic tests with the use of test equipment as required.
  • Interprets wave forms, graphs, charts, etc.
  • Performs operational tests and inspections on light rail cars, signal system train control equipment, sub station control and communications equipment to determine proper operation and/or corrective analysis of test findings and makes necessary repairs, adjustments and reports.
  • Trouble‑sh‑oots and analyzes operations of light rail cars and signal and sub station systems: develops and implements effective solutions for operational faults of vehicle systems and components.
  • Inspects, removes, disassembles, cleans, repairs, reassembles, adjusts, lubricates, and tests components and associated devices.
  • Works from specifications, drawings, schematics, inspections, instruments, parts, and repair manuals: obtains and maintains materials, tools, and instruments as required.
  • Interprets circuit configurations and integrated circuit logic clow diagrams.
  • Replaces and splices wiring and wire supporting structures in light rail car, signal train control and sub station systems.
  • Helps direct activities of employees of lower classification.
  • Cleans, clears work area, and maintains safe work habits.
  • Accomplishes daily work orders. Submits work orders to Supervisor for inspection and subsequent up‑date to electronics maintenance database.
  • Performs emergency duties as assigned: operates vehicles to garage, shop, and/or other specified locations, transports items by hand or company vehicle.
Education, Experience, and

Qualifications:
  • Minimum two (2) years technical with a degree or certificate from a recognized institution. Four (4) years of electronic related experience in electric powered rail car or signal system maintenance may be substituted for technical degree.
  • Individual must have practical knowledge of electronics (analog and digital), intermediate mathematics, use of hand tools, electrical schematics, advanced electricity systems. Individual must be proficient in diagnostic procedures, analysis, trouble‑shooting, diagnostic equipment use, soldering/desoldering, and safe use of shop equipment. Individual also must be able to work from and make mechanical, electrical, electronic, logic diagrams and schematics.
  • A total of four (4) years training and work experience will be required. Six (6) years without a degree.
  • Must possess a valid New Jersey driver’s license.
