School District 72 is looking for a Visual Language Interpreter to join our team of professionals who strive to bring the district's learning beliefs to life.

School District 72 (Campbell River) is located on the east coast of central Vancouver Island, extending north to Sayward and south to Oyster River. The district also includes the outer islands of Read, Cortes, and Quadra. The district serves over 5,600 students in 18 schools with a diverse range of programs that are progressive and responsive to the educational needs and interests of students.

About

The Role
Visual Language Interpreters support students who are deaf and hard of hearing (DHH) who need signing. The Visual Language Interpreter follows the guidance and leadership of the Teacher of the Deaf and Hard of Hearing, Learning Support Teacher and the Classroom Teacher in maintaining familiarization with instructional vocabulary and concepts in preparation for classroom instruction. It is collaborative work, in inclusive settings, to support students to meet the goals identified in their Individualized Education Plans (IEP).

American Sign Language (ASL) to English and English to ASL interpretation for students who are deaf/hard of hearing, their hearing peers, classroom teachers, parents, school staff and administration.

Interpretation of school activities such as class lessons, assemblies, field trips, teams, clubs and other educational experiences.

Ability to adjust the signing and communication levels required, in accordance with student's needs.

Participating in staff meetings as requested and performing all such other duties as may be assigned by the principal or designate.

Protecting and respecting the confidentiality of information.

Performs other related duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Completion of a two-year post-secondary program in American Sign Language Interpretation and at least one year of related experience.

Active membership or ability to become a member with Westcoast Association of Visual Language Interpreters (WAVLI).

Demonstrated fluency in American Sign Language (ie., Level 4 or higher on the ASL Proficiency Interview, as assessed by the Sign Language Institute of Canada).

Understanding of the role of the interpreter within an educational team.

Working knowledge of the district child abuse protocol and reporting procedures.

Current CPI (Crisis, Prevention, and Intervention) certification is an asset.

Level 1 First Aid Certification is an asset.

Computer literacy and experience with technological assists.

Demonstrated willingness to participate in professional development opportunities as provided by the district.

Proven ability to establish and maintain effective work relationships and working collaboratively in a team environment.

Working knowledge of reading and writing software programs (Microsoft 365).

Ability to effectively interact and establish positive rapport with students.

Ability to communicate effectively using tact, discretion, and diplomacy, while maintaining confidentiality in all matters.

Completion of a two-year post-secondary program in American Sign Language Interpretation.

Demonstrated fluency in American Sign Language (ie., Level 4 or higher on the ASL Proficiency Interview, as assessed by the Sign Language Institute of Canada).

Class 5 BC Driver's License.

A clear Criminal Record Check to be updated every five years.
