National Animal Health Specialist
Job Type: Non-staff opportunities.

Requisition : NPP (National Project Personnel). Primary

Location:

Yemen–Aden. Duration: 6 months (extendable based on budget availability).

Organizational Setting
FAO’s office for Yemen develops, promotes and implements strategies to address country‑wide food, agriculture and rural development priorities. The office assists governments in developing policies, programmes and projects to achieve food security, reduce hunger, support the agricultural and forestry sectors, and sustainably manage environmental and natural resources.

Reporting Lines
The incumbent reports to the Head of Livestock Sector and works closely with project managers/CTAs, technical and operational teams in the country.

Technical Focus
Plan and support the implementation of animal disease surveillance systems in Yemen, livestock vaccination and treatment campaigns, and pre‑ and post‑vaccination evaluation.

Tasks and Responsibilities

Assist in the preparation and implementation of disease surveillance systems, vaccination campaigns and the pre‑ and post‑vaccination evaluation.

Provide technical support to the General Directorate of Animal Health and Veterinary Quarantine (GDAHVQ) in laboratory analysis of serum samples and report writing.

Follow up with GDAHVQ and agriculture offices on technical and financial reports and prepare payments for LoAs.

Assist in preparing and facilitating a 5‑day training course on animal disease diagnostics, laboratory quality assurance and surveillance systems for 10 lab technicians.

Assist in preparing and facilitating a 4‑day training course on transboundary animal diseases surveillance, control and outbreak investigation for 30 surveillance officers.

Assist in planning and implementing capacity building of veterinary extension staff on TADs surveillance.

Support planning, coordination and organization of meetings with GDAHVQ, private‑sector stakeholders, veterinary statutory bodies, laboratories and veterinary education establishments.

Assist in collecting and reviewing available data related to One Health and antimicrobial resistance in northern governorates.

Minimum Requirements

Advanced degree in veterinary medicine, veterinary epidemiology or a related field.

Minimum of 5 years of directly applicable experience in managing animal health programmes or related experience.

Working knowledge of English and Arabic.

National of Yemen.

In‑depth knowledge of programme and project implementation.

Relevant experience in emergency contexts.
