Language Specialist

(One year term with potential for extension or to Indeterminate)

Dehcho Divisional Education Council invites applications from certified teachers who are dedicated to teaching and have experience and/or interest in the cultural, linguistic and traditional heritage of the Dene. The teacher will offer a holistic, culturally relevant program that supports the language and cultural heritage of the students and addresses the needs of all students who may have learning challenges in multi-grade classes.

Qualifications:

  • Must hold or be eligible for a Northwest Territories Professional Teaching Certificate
  • Proficiency in speaking Dene Zhatie (South Slave) language is required
  • Must demonstrate the ability to effectively engage with students and their parents in multi-grade environments
  • Direct experience with the Northwest Territories curricula is preferred
  • Familiarity with the
    ¿ Our Languages Curriculum
    ¿ is an asset
  • Experience in promoting and organizing culturally appropriate activities is highly desirable
  • The ability to teach additional courses from JK
    ¿ 12 would be considered an asset
  • Preference will be given to candidates who identify as Indigenous Dene

    At the interview stage, candidates will be asked to submit three references, including current and past supervisors.

    Candidates must provide a satisfactory Criminal Record Check (CRC) as well as a Vulnerable Sector Checks (VSC) from the RCMP if they are contacted for an interview.

    Failure to provide a satisfactory CRC and VSC may deem the candidate disqualified from the competitive process.

    This job opening is for the 2025/2026 school year.

    Indigenous Employment Policy

    Priority for Northwest Territories Teachers' Association positions shall be granted as follows:

  • Priority 1:
    Teachers who have received official lay-off notice;
  • Priority 2:
    Stage One Priority (S1P) - Indigenous people who are recognized members and descendent of a First Nations, Métis, or Inuit people indigenous to the present boundaries of the Northwest Territories;
  • Priority 3:
    Stage Two Priority (S2P) - Indigenous people who are recognized members and descendent of a First Nations, Métis, or Inuit people indigenous to areas of Canada, outside of the present boundaries of the Northwest Territories.;
  • Priority 4:
    Indeterminate Teachers eligible for Transfer or Promotion and not included in Priorities 2 & 3;
  • Priority 5:
    Term teachers not included in Priorities 2 & 3;
  • Priority 6: NWT Resident Teachers not employed by the GNWT or included in Priorities 2 & 3;
  • Priority 7:
    Teachers who are not residents of the NWT and who are not included in Priorities.
  • Criminal Records Check

    Candidates must provide a satisfactory vulnerable sector check. Failure to provide a satisfactory check may deem you disqualified from the competition.
