Location: Similkameen (Hope)
District Counsellor (ITINERANT) – Term Specific
The District Counsellor will work with the Inclusive Education Team and district staff to improve student learning and well‑being. The role includes providing mental health support, serving as a leader for mental‑health initiatives, and collaborating with Indigenous students and families.
Responsibilities
Provide mental health supports for students in the Fraser Cascade School District, including remote learners.
Support students and families at school, in the community, on and off reserve.
Work flexible hours, including after‑school and evenings.
Prioritize the needs of elementary students and collaborate with the Inclusive Education Department.
Complete referrals to the ICY Team and other agencies.
Directly support and supervise District Child & Youth Care Workers.
Deliver direct counselling and support to students and families.
Lead staff on mental‑health matters.
Advocate for students and parents.
Participate as a member of school‑based teams when appropriate.
Provide instruction in peer helping, conflict resolution, social skills, and life skills.
Consult with teachers, counsellors, district personnel, and administrators regarding priority students.
Assist in developing safety plans and supporting school safety initiatives.
Support school‑based counsellors, Child & Youth Care Workers, and Indigenous Support Workers.
Know community resources and connect with them when necessary.
Support district pro‑social programs such as Mind Up, Roots of Empathy, and Open Parachute.
Minimum Academic Qualifications / Experience
Master’s degree in Counselling Psychology or equivalent.
Bachelor of Education degree or equivalent.
Two years satisfactory teaching experience.
Valid B.C. teaching certificate.
Preferred Qualifications / Experience
Experience in child or youth mental health settings.
Counselling experience at elementary or secondary level.
Experience in district or centralized inclusive education.
Staff supervision experience.
Knowledge of Inclusive Education, including IEPs and school‑based team meetings.
Training in emotional and behavioural disorders.
Experience developing safety, behaviour intervention, emergency, risk, and threat assessment plans.
Experience supporting students with behaviour disorders.
Experience with suicide risk assessment.
Experience supporting Indigenous students and families on reserve.
Benefits
Salary range: $61,502 – $113,628 depending on category and grid level.
