Position Summary
The Project Based STEM Teaching Assistants are creative, energetic, and engaging college/university students with a passion for math and/or science. Under the supervision of the classroom teacher and in collaboration with the Project-Based Coordinator and Lead Teacher, teaching assistants will join the University of the Pacific’s partnership with Tracy Unified School District to implement the Reach for the Stars STEM Academy (RFTSSA) for the summer of 2026 on the Stockton campus.

Academy Overview

Program serves students in the Tracy Unified School District; academy is held virtually.

Academy is academically intense, mathematics‑based, and designed for students lacking access to enrichment programs.

Purposes include developing abstract and critical reasoning, problem‑solving, and technological skills for college and career readiness.

Life goals focus on leadership, self‑esteem, and application of knowledge to everyday problems.

Target students are 6th–12th graders and those enrolled in 7th–12th grade summer programs.

Curriculum spans progressive STEM concepts, project‑based, with pre/post tests, guest speakers, team projects, research, field trips, and skill assessments.

Responsibilities

Assist classroom teacher with instruction of up to 25 students; not responsible for teaching the class.

Support the Daily Curriculum and deliver instructional materials in STEM themes.

Participate in staff orientation, training, meetings, and program preparation activities.

Work closely with Tomorrow Project Program Administrator to help achieve goals: increase interest in STEM, inspire underrepresented students, prepare students for college, and improve graduation rates.

Essential Functions

Strong communication skills to coordinate with classroom teacher.

Prepare lesson materials, displays, exhibits, equipment, and demonstrations.

Present subject matter under teacher guidance using lectures, discussions, or supervised role‑playing.

Tutor students individually or in small groups to reinforce concepts.

Supervise students in classroom and adjacent areas.

Conduct STEM skill demonstrations and assist completion of assignments and projects.

Distribute teaching materials, tests, homework; collect completed items.

Support administrative policies governing student behavior.

Grade homework and tests, record results electronically.

Instruct and monitor safe use of equipment.

Observe performance and record data for assessment.

Organize materials and display student work for assessment.

Supervise instructional games and recreational activities.

Participate in parent‑teacher conferences.

Plan and develop teaching aids (study guides, charts, graphs).

Prepare outlines and plans; submit to teacher for review.

Assist students with special needs or limited English proficiency.

Maintain attendance records.

Assist with student drop‑off and pick‑up retrieval.

Attend staff meetings and serve on committees as required.

Carry out supervised behavior modification programs.

Laminate materials if needed.

Maintain classroom computers; help students with hardware/software.

Operate and maintain audiovisual equipment.

Provide assistive device support for students with disabilities.

Inventory teaching materials and supplies.

Type, file, duplicate materials.

Use computers and audiovisual aids to supplement lessons.

Perform other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

Minimum two (2) years of experience working with school‑age students in STEM subjects.

Local college/university student (sophomore or above).

Current or former MESA student.

Experience working with younger students.

Preferred Qualifications

Strong math/STEM skills and academic transcripts.
