TITLE:
French as a Second Language (FSL) Facilitator
REPORTS TO:
Assistant Superintendent of Education
SUMMARY:
The French as a Second Language (FSL) Facilitator works collaboratively with FSL teachers and school leaders to strengthen implementation of the Common European Framework Reference for Languages (CEFR) across Grades 4-12 FSL programs, The role focuses on job-embedded professional learning, classroom-based support, and instructional coherence aligned with the Ontario Core FSL Curriculum.
The FSL Facilitator supports teachers in developing effective assessment and instruction practices that promote oral communication, action-oriented learning opportunities, and student engagement and proficiency in the French Language, while building collective efficacy and instructional consistency across schools.
Responsibilities:
Working directly with Educators, often directly in classrooms, to strengthen teacher knowledge and facilitate consistent and intentional implementation of CEFR inspired practices across Grades 4-12 FSL classrooms, with an emphasis on oral language development and proficiency-based instruction.
Support FSL teachers through job-embedded professional learning, including co-planning, co-teaching, and reflective dialogue.
Support alignment of instruction, assessment, and evaluation with the Ontario Core FSL Curriculum and CEFR descritors.
Model and support high-impact FSL instructional strategies, including authentic communicative tasks, descriptive feedback, learning goals, and success criteria aligned Ontario Core FSL Curriculum and CEFR descriptors.
Support development and use of assessment for, as, and of learning practices, including CEFR-aligned tools and moderation of student work.
Collaborate with Classroom Educators to support instructional improvement aligned with school and system learning priorities.
Communicate regularly with system instructional teams to share school-based needs, successes, and progress related to FSL and CEFR implementation.
Support professional learning related to Core FSL expectations, CEFR, differentiated instruction, and inclusive language learning practices.
Assist with procurement, development and sharing of professional learning resources for FSL teachers.
Develop and facilitate professional learning workshops for FSL teachers, including procurement of professional services (e.g. consultants, speakers, etc.)
Collaborate with classroom educators and system teams, in the planning, coordination and delivery of FSL cultural activities and experiences.
Assist in the planning, coordination of French Language authentic experiential learning opportunities and programs with a pathway focus (e.g. SHSM)
Collect data at the school and system levels including, but not limited to, effectiveness of French as a Second Language programs, student outcomes in relation to district goals and ministry priorities.
Assist with the New Teacher Induction program.
Assist with the management and coordination of the DELF for students enrolled in Grade 12 FSL courses.
Responsibilities may vary in order to be responsive to identified system and school needs.
Education/
Experience:
Minimum of French as a Second Language Part 3 Specialist qualification.
Demonstrated expertise in French as a Second Language instruction.
Strong working knowledge of the Ontario Core FSL Curriculum (Grades 4–12).
Demonstrated understanding and experience with the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR).
Minimum 5 years’ experience teaching FSL across multiple grades and/or program types (e.g., Core French, Extended French).
Demonstrated pedagogical knowledge of oral language development, second-language acquisition, and proficiency-based instruction.
Experience supporting teacher professional learning through collaborative or coaching models.
Experience using student evidence and assessment data to inform instruction.
Understanding of inclusive practices and support for diverse learners in FSL contexts
Professional Knowledge and Practice:
Assessment for, as, and of learning in FSL contexts.
Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR).
Universal Design for Learning (UDL) and differentiated instruction.
Moderation and collaborative analysis of student work.
Designing instruction that supports higher-order thinking and authentic language use.
Reflective, adaptive, and inquiry-based professional practice.
Use of research and evidence to inform FSL instruction and CEFR implementation.
Effective use of technology to support FSL instruction and assessment.
