Position: School Wellness Specialist (FNSB)
Location: Central Yukon (Dawson City)

Job Summary and Requirements

This is a term position working 37.5 hours biweekly, ending March 31, 2029. The eligibility list will be used to fill other anticipatory term positions over the next 12 months.

Location  – Takhini Elementary School (TAK) – Whitehorse.

Home to the Kwanlin Dün First Nation and Ta'an Kwäch'än Council, Takhini Elementary school is one of 11 Yukon schools that have joined the newly established First Nation School Board (FNSB) in the Yukon. Southern Tutchone is the traditional language of Kwanlin Dün First Nation and Ta'an Kwäch'än Council people. Takhini Elementary is a K‑7 school with approximately 141 students. We are actively seeking a committed and qualified educator who is dedicated to living and being an active member of the community.

Our educational professionals value authentic relationships and are committed to working with students, community, administration and the FNSB to make positive, progressive changes to education outcomes for learners of Takhini Elementary.

The School Wellness Position

The School Wellness Specialist works in collaboration with Kwanlin Dün First Nation and Ta'an Kwäch'än Council, school staff, and receives clinical oversight from Student Support Services, to provide a broad range of direct supports and consultation services to students, families, and staff at Takhini Elementary School. The position works collaboratively with learners, families, First Nation Government, community service providers, and educators to identify learners' concerns and provide supportive services that contribute to the success of all learners.

The role plays an important part in partnering with the First Nation to localize and provide supports grounded in Kwanlin Dün First Nation and Ta'an Kwäch'än Council ways.

Essential Qualifications

Post‑secondary degree in social work or equivalent

Experience providing social‑work related services, including assessment, consultation, case management, counseling, crisis intervention, and/or referrals

Experience of fering social and emotional support to children and youth

Training in restorative practices, critical incident stress response/debriefing, and/or violent threat risk assessment

Experience working in rural settings (asset)

Experience working in partnership with First Nations community to localize supports (preferred asset)

Desired Knowledge, Skills and Suitability

Ability to work collaboratively and maintain authentic relationships with the Champagne and Aishihik First Nations, First Nations people, community elders, and families, promoting greater community involvement in school‑based activities and educational programming

Strong planning and organizational skills, with the ability to evaluate and record progress, and motivate learners

Solid understanding of an inclusive education philosophy

Excellent interpersonal, communication, and collaborative skills to work with parents and caregivers, staff members, coaches, the First Nation School Board and other partners

Passion for developing and maintaining strong and respectful relationships and trust with students, their families, and the community as a whole

Demonstrated ability to implement practices grounded in restorative processes

Demonstrated ability to implement effective support systems to assist students (e.g., mentorship opportunities, study groups)

Knowledge of, and ability to implement, developmentally responsive care and restorative practices

Valid class 5 driver’s licence

Job Requirements

Willingness and ability to travel within Yukon

Eligibility to be registered as a social worker in a Canadian college of social workers
