Band 1 ($53,500 – $58,500 · $27.44 – $30.00/hr)

POSITION PURPOSE
Performs all duties and responsibilities in accordance with the Yuułuʔiłʔatḥ Government policies, standards, practices, and procedures, as directed by the Manager of Language Services. Maintains confidentiality on all matters relating to the affairs of the Yuułuʔiłʔatḥ. The intensive program for language learning also includes teaching language to others. Language learners work within the Culture, Language & Heritage department to support language revitalization efforts.

ACCOUNTABILITY
Language Learning

Learning language as a team to build fluency

Committing to 15 hours a week of learning — 12 hours in person and online, plus 3 hours outside of working hours

Working closely with fluent speakers to learn language

Teaching & Knowledge Sharing

Learning and teaching what you know to others using the 'Where Are Your Keys' method

Sharing language in an animated, fun, and welcoming way with community learners

Documentation

Documenting language learning through videos, pictures, and audio recordings

Maintaining learning materials and records that support ongoing revitalization work

Program Participation

Travelling as necessary for language conferences or learning with neighbouring nations

Attending in-person intensive sessions in hitac̓u twice yearly (1–2 weeks each)

Performing other duties and responsibilities as necessary in the performance of the position, and as assigned from time to time

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE

Required:

Criminal Record Check

Able to work well within a collaborative team framework

Access to a personal computer (not a tablet or phone) for online sessions

Willing to be animated and share language in a fun way

Preferred:

Previous teaching experience an asset

Computer skills including MS Office, Google Drive, and video conferencing software (Microsoft Teams, Zoom, etc.)

Familiarity with the West Barkley dialect (learners of other dialects welcome)

WORKING CONDITIONS

Part-time commitment of 15 hours per week — 12 hours in person/online and 3 hours of independent study

Most weekly work happens online (3–4 hours of video conferencing per day, 4 days a week)

In-person sessions in hitac̓u, BC twice yearly (1–2 weeks each)

Travel may be required for language conferences or learning with neighbouring nations

CULTURAL REQUIREMENTS

Genuine respect for Yuułuʔiłʔatḥ traditions, culture and protocols

Hišukʔaaqƛin huuhtakšiiḥ

Priority consideration given to Yuułuʔiłʔatḥ citizens and members of Nuu-chah-nulth speaking communities
